OWINGS MILLS, MD-The York College field hockey team
suffered another tough and tight loss as Stevenson University
handed the Spartans a 3-2 Capital Athletic Conference overtime loss
in Owings Mills, MD on a rainy Thursday afternoon. The Spartans are
now 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the CAC while the Mustangs improve to
5-5 overall and 1-1 in the league. Four of the Spartans' five
losses have come by one goal including both conference
setbacks.
The Mustangs struck early as Krissy Leventis
opened the scoring with a goal off a pass from Brittany Martin just
5:03 into the game. The green and white knotted the score at one
courtesy of senior captain Casey Knauss (St.
Michael's,Md./Easton) as she scored her second goal
of the year in the 19th minute. Sophomore Casey Lawrence
(Abbottstown, Pa./Delone Catholic) notched the assist on
Knauss's goal.
The Mustangs recaptured the lead just under 10
minutes later as Leventis found the back of the cage for the second
time in the game. Jennifer Sauers earned the assist on the goal as
the hosts took the one goal lead to the break.
The Spartans came out and played well to open
the second half. York dictated play in their offensive half and
that control paid off just over nine minutes into the half as
senior captain April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern
York) tied the game with her ninth goal of the year.
Knauss earned the assist for her third point of the game.
The green and white would finish the second
half outshooting the Mustangs 8-1 but the Spartans could not push
the game-winner past Mustang goalie Kara Zimmerman as the squads
headed to overtime.
In the extra session, Leventis victimized the
Spartans for a third and final time as she scored off a Cat
Connelly pass 5:35 into overtime. The three goals doubled
Leventis' season total as she entered the game having scored
a trio of goals for 2008.
The Spartans finished the game holding a
significant 14-5 edge in total shots. Unfortunately for York, the
Mustangs found pay dirt on three of their five shots while York put
eight on target with Zimmerman recording six saves. Spartan goalie
Claire Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) did
not record a save in her 75:35 of action.
The Spartans held a 9-6 edge in penalty corners
for the game.
McFarland's goal raised her career point
total to 96 which elevates her to second on the all-time scoring
list as she passed Spartan Sandra Lancaster. McFarland is two goals
away from tying Jackie Russell for first on the career goals list.
McFarland has 44 career goals.
The green and white returns to action on
Saturday afternoon as they face #9 Salisbury University in a
Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time in Salisbury, MD is
set for 1:00 pm.
