YORK, PA-The York College women's
volleyball squad remained unbeaten as they rolled past Catholic
University 3-1 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night in
Washington, D.C. The Spartans defeated their former Capital
Athletic Conference rival 25-20, 25-16, 18-25, and 25-21. York
improves to 3-0 overall while the Cardinals fall to 2-3 for
2008.
The Spartans played well in the first two sets to take the early
lead. The green and white then made extensive substitutions in the
third set, which the Cardinals captured. York closed out the fourth
game by outlasting the Cardinals by four points. The Spartans hit a
robust .361 in the final set to help earn the win.
Freshman Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle)
continued her strong play with 11 kills, 24 assists, nine digs and
a service ace. Bucher hit .588 for the game as she made just one
error in 17 attack attempts. Junior Casi Brough (Hanover,
Pa./Spring Grove) notched 10 kills and 10 digs for the
double-double. Sophomore Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue,
Pa./Red Lion) contributed nine kills, four blocks and four
digs. Freshman Alysse Beshore (York,
Pa./Northeastern) chipped in with nine kills of her own
while she also had four blocks of her own.
Junior libero Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar
Crest) paced the Spartans' defensive effort as she
notched 21 digs. Freshman Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf,
Pa./Northeastern) added 18 assists and eight digs to the
Spartan cause.
The Spartans finished the match hitting .258 while they also racked
up seven service aces, three block solos and eight team blocks.
The Spartans return to action at the Muhlenberg College Buttermaker
Tournament on Friday afternoon. The green and white face DeSales
University in the opening round at 4:00 pm followed by a match
against Susquehanna University at 8:00 pm.
