YORK, PA-The York College volleyball squad captured a pair of
victories during the opening day of the Spartan Best Western
Westgate Invitational at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York, PA. In the
opener, the Spartans outlasted DeSales 3-1 as the set scores were
17-25, 26-24, 25-10, and 25-22. York followed the opening win with
another 3-1 victory as they defeated Montclair State 25-21, 21-25,
25-17, and 25-18.
In the opener, the Spartans took an early lead in the first set
only to have the Bulldogs blow right by them to take the set 25-17.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair as Spartans were down
early but fought back to capture the set. It was all York in the
third set as they started with an 8-1 lead and never looked back.
The fourth set was another nip and tuck affair as the Spartans took
another early lead only to have the Bulldogs come back and make a
game of it.
In the win over DeSales, the Spartans were led by the tandem of
Casi Brough (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) and
Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) as they
each tallied 13 kills. Brough hit .423 for the game while she also
had six digs. Waltermyer hit .370 for the match while she added
three block assists in the victory. Junior libero Amanda
Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) recorded 33 digs while
she was also a perfect 33-for-33 in service return. Freshman
Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern)
recorded the double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs while fellow
frosh Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle)
chipped in with a double-double of her own with 23 assists and 10
digs. Bucher also had four block assists. Junior Jaclyn
Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) contributed 11
kills and six digs to the Spartan attack. Freshman Sierra
Dell (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) also had a strong
match with nine kills, a solo block and a block assist.
In the nightcap, the green and white played well in the opening set
before falling behind big in the second. York trailed by as many as
nine points before roaring back to tie the match at 20. The Red
Hawks took five of the final six points of the set to knot the
match at one set each. The Spartans then played some of their best
volleyball of the day in clinching sets three and four for the
match win.
Brough put together another strong offensive match as the captain
had 13 kills and hit .345 for the match. Bucher and Waltermyer were
the other two Spartans in double figures in kills as they had ten
each. Bucher also handed out 15 assists and had 10 digs for the
rare triple-double. Waltermyer chipped in with a solo block and
three block assists. Rentzel dished out 30 assists while Clemens
recorded a team-high 23 digs while she also had three service aces.
Sophomore Jana Arentz (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) came
off the bench to provide a little spark for York. She notched 11
digs while she also had a pair of service aces.
The Spartans continue the tournament on Saturday afternoon as they
host Albright College at 11:00 am before playing Eastern University
in the tournament championship game at 3:00 pm. The Spartans and
Eagles have already advanced to the championship game by virtue of
their tie-breaker with the other one-loss team on their side of the
bracket.
