YORK, PA-The York College women's
volleyball squad opened their Capital Athletic Conference home
slate with a listless 3-0 loss to the University of Mary Washington
Eagles on Tuesday night in York. The Eagles won 25-20, 25-16, and
27-25. Mary Washington improves to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the
conference while the green and white falls to 6-7 overall and 0-2
in the conference.
The Spartans found themselves down big early and that would be a
theme all night long. The Eagles jumped out to 6-0 lead in the
first set. The Spartans battled back to tie the set at eight before
taking a 13-10 lead. The Eagles responded by tying the set at 15
and then taking a 16-15 lead. The guests would push the lead 23-19
before settling for the five-point first set win.
The second set was almost identical as the Eagles jumped out to a
5-2 lead. The Spartans drew to within one at 12-11 but Mary
Washington ripped off a 9-4 spurt that pushed the lead to 21-15.
Mary Washington closed out the game with a 4-1 run that left the
Spartans down two sets to none.
The third set saw the Eagles put their foot on the Spartans'
throat as they jumped out to a 13-4 lead. Much to the Spartans
credit, they battled back but it was very much a case of too
little, too late. York pulled to within three at 20-17 and then
forged a tie at 22. The Spartans next trailed 24-22 but again
forced a tie with consecutive points. The two teams traded points
to get to 25 before the Eagles received a Spartan service error and
then notched a kill to finish off the match.
The Eagles were led by Anne Lutkenhaus as the junior had 13 kills
and five service aces. Setter Katie Shiflett handed out 21 assists
while Kelley Hueber had nine digs and six kills. Kathryn Carter
chipped in with nine digs for the Eagles.
The Spartans were paced by the junior duo of Jaclyn Davis
(Cherry Hills, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and Casi
Brough (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) as they each had 10
kills. The duo combined for 20 of the Spartans' 32 kills in
the match. Junior libero Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar
Crest) led the Spartans' defensive charge with 16
digs while Davis had seven digs. Freshman Heather Bucher
(Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) handed out 15 assists while
fellow freshman Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf,
Pa./Northeastern) added 14 assists of her own. The
Spartans finished the match hitting just .140 as a team.
York returns to action on Friday afternoon as they host the Best
Western Westgate Invitational. The Spartans play at 5:00 pm vs.
DeSales and then Montclair at 9:00 pm.
