FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College field hockey squad saw their
modest two-game win streak come to an end as the University of Mary
Washington Eagles got a goal late in the second half to post a 3-2
Capital Athletic Conference victory in Fredericksburg, VA on a very
humid Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0
in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in
the league.
The Eagles took control of the contest early. Mary Washington
got on the board just 8:47 into the game as Alison Weckstein
redirected a Sarah Pierson shot past Spartan goalie Claire
Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) for the
game's first goal. The Eagles struck for a second goal just
57 seconds later as Weckstein slid a pass past Rekitzke to the
waiting stick of Emma Jones who put the ball in the back of the
cage for the 2-0 lead.
The Spartans slowly started to work themselves back into the
game. The green and white trimmed their deficit in half in the 28th
minute as Megan Spangler (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon
County) crossed a pass to senior April McFarland
(York, Pa./Eastern York) who drove the ball past Eagle
goalie Chrissy Bowdren for the Spartan tally. McFarland scored
again just 3:23 later as she notched an unassisted goal, tying the
game at two. The goal was McFarland's fourth goal of the year
and her 65th career goal. The goals move her into fourth place on
the all-time career goals list while her 85 points also ranks her
fourth, five points back of former Spartan great Rachel Alderfer.
The Eagles regained control of the game after the half as they
limited a tired Spartan squad to one shot while they fired off
nine. The ninth shot of the half found it's mark as Weckstein
tallied her second goal of the game with 5:47 remaining in
regulation. That would prove to be the game-winner as the Spartans
had a chance to tie on an Allison Roush (Lancaster,
Pa./Manheim Township) shot with 38 second remaining in
regulation. Bowdren made the save on Roush's shot which
preserved the win.
Bowdren captured the win as she recorded three saves. Rekitzke
recorded seven saves but suffered the loss for the green and white.
The Eagles finished the game holding a 20-7 edge in shots and a
slim 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they
travel to Juniata to face the Eagles. Game time is set for 4:30 pm.
