ANNVILLE, PA-The York College volleyball squad
snapped their five match losing streak with a pair of wins during
the second day of the Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen Tournament on
Saturday in Annville, PA. The Spartans defeated Penn State Altoona
25-14, 25-11, and 25-15 and then dispatched Ursinus 25-12, 25-17,
and 25-18.
In the win over the Lions, the Spartans received a number of strong
efforts. Freshman Sierra Dell (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock) had seven kills and five block assists
as she hit .500 for the match. Fellow freshman Julie Coombs
(Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) banged out five kills while
she also had three block assists. Juniors Casi Brough
(Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) and Jaclyn Davis
(Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) each notched six
kills while Brough chipped in with five digs. Junior libero
Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) led the
Spartan defense with 24 of the Spartans' 44 digs for the
match. Freshman Heather Bucher (Carlisle,
Pa./Carlisle) had 16 assists, five kills, three digs, and
a pair of block assists. Freshman Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf,
Pa./Northeastern) added 16 assists for the Spartans.
In the victory over the Bears, Coombs had an outstanding match as
she led York with a team-high 11 kills. She hit .562 for the match
while she also had four digs and a service ace. Brough added nine
kills and four digs while freshman Alysse Beshore (York,
Pa./Northeastern) notched seven kills and hit .500 for the
match. Bucher recorded 18 assists, eight digs, five kills, and two
block assists. Rentzel handed out 14 assists while she also had
three service aces and six digs. Clemens led the defense with 12
digs.
Clemens was named to the All-Tournament team as the junior has
blossomed in the libero role for the green and white. Clemens has
now been named to the All-Tournament team in both of the
Spartans' in-season tournaments in 2008.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday evening as they host Mary
Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference match. Game time at
Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 7:00 pm.
