YORK, PA-The York College women's volleyball squad
received a number of timely individual efforts as they swept a pair
of matches to open the season on Saturday in York. The Spartans
outlasted McDaniel 3-2 in the opener and then came back to defeat a
talented Elizabethtown squad 3-1. The game scores for the first
match were 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, and 15-10. Against the Blue
Jays, the Spartans won 25-23, 25-27, 25-12, and 15-14.
In the opener, the Spartans looked very sluggish in the opening set
before bouncing back to take the second and third sets. The Green
Terror breezed past the green and white in set four, setting up the
fifth set which the Spartans won by five.
Sophomore Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red
Lion) paced the Spartan offense as she had 13 kills while
junior Casi Brough (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove)
notched a double-double with 10 kills and 25 digs. Junior libero
Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) played
well defensively as she recorded 24 digs. Junior Amanda
Rouillard (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) had 20 assists while
freshman Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle)
handed out 19 assists and also had eight kills, six digs and a pair
of service aces.
The emotional five set win over the Green Terror gave the Spartans
a lift heading into the second match of the day against the Blue
Jays. York sprinted out to an early lead before the Blue Jays
closed the gap. Elizabethtown would not be able to overcome the
Spartans as York won the opening set. The second set was the most
entertaining one of the match as Elizabethtown jumped out to a
significant early lead only to have the Spartans storm back and tie
the game at 22. The two teams went back and forth before the Blue
Jays pushed out to the deciding two-point margin at 27-25. The
Spartans would respond in a positive manner as they took the play
to the guests and ran away with the win with two decisive scores in
sets three and four.
Junior Jaclyn Davis (Cherry Hills, N.J./Cherry Hill
East) came off the bench and was fantastic as she banged
out 11 kills and collected seven digs. Brough chipped in with nine
kills and four digs while Waltermyer had seven kills and four block
assists. Clemens again played well defensively as she had a
team-high 22 digs. Bucher handed out 16 assists to accompany her
seven digs, six kills, two aces, and two block assists. Freshman
Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) also
played well with a team-high 24 assists and 10 digs for her first
career double-double.
The Spartans are off until Tuesday when they travel to Catholic
University to face the Cardinals in a non-conference contest. Game
time in Washington, D.C. is set for 7:00 pm.
