YORK, PA-The York College
field hockey squad dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Frostburg State
on Senior Day in York. The Spartans fall to 8-12 as they have now
lost three of their last four games. The Bobcats improve to 14-3
overall with the win.
Prior to the game, York honored their three
seniors. Forward April McFarland (York, Pa./Eastern
York), midfielder Casey Knauss (St.
Michael's, Md./Easton), and defender Laurel
Sturner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) were joined
by their parents in pregame festivities. Unfortunately for York,
that pregame ceremony was the highlight of the day. The game was
played in a steady, driving rain and very gusty winds. The winds
were bad enough to delay the game 40 seconds into the match as the
southern goal blew over, forcing a temporary stoppage of play.
The Bobcats, with the rain and wind at their
back, jumped on York early as Brandi Mixell took a shot off a
corner. That initial shot was saved by Spartan defender
Julie Reahl (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) but the
rebound came right back to Mixell who was not denied the second
time as she put the ball home for the goal, her fifth tally of the
campaign. The goal came just 4:16 into the game. It continues a
disturbing trend for the Spartans as they have made a habit of
surrendering goals early into contests.
The Spartans tied the game in the 13th minute of
action as Allison Roush (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim
Township) carried the ball into the Bobcat defensive zone.
She drew Frostburg goalie Samantha Foland to her and then slid a
beautiful pass to McFarland who converted the pass for her 16th
goal of the season.
Frostburg recaptured the lead just before the
half as Brooke Tapman got a loose ball at the top of the circle and
fired a shot past Spartan goalie Claire Rekitzke (Seaford,
Del./Seaford Senior) who appeared to be stuck in between
coming out to challenge the shot or staying on her line. The goal
was Tapman's eighth of the year and came with just 2:54
remaining in the half.
The green and white came out of the break, and
with the wind and rain at their back, looked to force the issue
offensively. The Spartans tied the game when Roush collected
a loose ball in front of the cage and poked home the ball for the
goal 8:24 into the second half.
The Bobcats converted the game-winner with 11:12
remaining in regulation as they got consecutive penalty corners. On
the second penalty corner, Michelle Frost fired off a shot that
Rekitzke saved. Unfortunately for the green and white, the rebound
found the stick of Amanda Kerstetter who lifted a shot over
Rekitzke's right shoulder for the goal.
The Spartans were able to fire off three shots
in the final 10 minutes of action but none found the mark as York
dropped the match.
Both teams finished the game with 15 shots while
the Bobcats held a 10-8 margin in penalty corners. Frostburg put 11
of their shots on target while York finished with seven shots on
goal.
Rekitzke finished the game with six saves while
Foland registered three stops. Reahl recorded a pair of defensive
saves for York while Sami Topolski and Liesa Bohannon each had a
defensive save for Frostburg.
The Spartans conclude their regular season on
Tuesday afternoon as they host Lebanon Valley in a non-conference
contest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
