SALISBURY, MD-The 22nd ranked Salisbury
University Sea Gulls cruised past the York College Spartans 3-0 on
Wednesday night in a Capital Athletic Conference match in
Salisbury, MD. The Sea Gulls improve to 28-1 overall and 6-0 in the
CAC. The loss snaps York's three match win streak as they
fall to 13-10 overall and 3-4 in the conference. The set scores
were 25-10, 25-7, 25-21.
In set one, the Sea Gulls jumped out to a 7-1 lead and built their
advantage to as many as 14 points on three different occasions. The
Gulls finished the set capturing a 15-point win. The second set was
much of the same. The set saw the Spartans tie the score at four
thanks to a 3-0 run before the Sea Gulls smacked the Spartans with
a 14-0 spurt that gave the hosts a 18-4 lead. Salisbury pushed the
lead to 19 before settling for the 18 point set victory. In the
third set, the teams were tied at three before the Gulls put
together a 5-0 spurt to take an 8-3 lead. The Spartans cut the lead
to four at 11-7 but Salisbury pushed the lead back to eight at
19-11. The Spartans scored eight of the next ten points to cut the
Sea Gull lead to 21-19. The hosts closed out the match by winning
four of the next six points for the 25-21 third set win.
The Spartans were led by the trio of Heather Bucher
(Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle), Alishia Waltermyer
(Brogue, Pa./Red Lion), and Sierra Dell (Glen
Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) as they each had five kills while
Dell added two blocks. Freshman setter Cortni Rentzel (Mt.
Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) handed out 19 assists while she
also paced the Spartans with 16 digs. Junior libero Amanda
Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) added 12 digs for the
green and white.
The Spartans return to action on Friday evening as they face Rowan
and Richard Stockton at the Susquehanna Crusader Classic. The green
and white play Rowan at 6:00 pm and Richard Stockton at 8:00 pm.
