YORK, PA – The York College volleyball
team picked up a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory in
dominating fashion Wednesday evening from the Grumbacher Sport
& Fitness Center. The Spartans improve their 2008 mark to 11-9
including 2-3 in league play winning their three games 25-6, 25-15,
and 25-10. The visiting Wolverines drop to 10-7 and 1-3 in
conference.
After surrendering the first point of the match, the Spartans
rattled off six straight points to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The
York advantage would be cut to four at 7-3, before the Spartans
grabbed nine straight to push their margin to 16-3. York would take
nine of the next eleven points to finish out the frame with the
25-6 victory.
The second stanza proved a slightly tighter game. Sophomore
Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) tallied
four of York's first five points in the second game as the
Spartans lead 5-2 early. Wesley would inch back to draw within one
at 11-10, courtesy of three straight Spartan miscues. After a kill
from Wesley freshman Jessica Taylor, York let the ensuing serve
land just on the line followed by two consecutive hitting errors.
The Spartans would quickly snap out of the short lull taking ten of
the next eleven points, including a seven-point run. With the score
line sitting a 21-11, the sides nearly traded the next several
points before junior Casi Brough (Hanover, Pa./Spring
Grove) finished the game with a floor-rattling kill.
York continued their dominance in the third game, jumping out to
an 8-1 margin. Later in the frame, a seven-point run, which
included back-to-back service aces from freshman Heather
Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle), would push the Spartan
lead to 17-3,. The green and white would then propel their
advantage to an impressive 20-6 before finishing out the game and
the match with a 25-10 victory.
Waltermyer had yet another strong outing for the Spartan squad,
recording eight kills on eight attempts for a perfect 1.000 hitting
percentage. Freshman Alysse Beshore (York,
Pa./Northeastern) was nothing short of outstanding,
tallying eight kills and registering one solo block. Brough posted
eight kills as well, the third Spartan to reach that mark in the
match. Buchar posted six kills, 16 assists, and three service aces
while freshman Cortni Rentzl (Mt. Wolf,
Pa./Northeastern) handed-out a team-high 18 helpers.
Junior libero Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar
Crest) led the Spartans with nine digs and also chipped in
with three service aces. Freshman Julie Coombs
(Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) pitched in a team-leading
five service aces.
York returns to action on Saturday, October 4, as the green and
white host Franklin and Marshall on York's Fall Fest Weekend.
The Spartans and Diplomats are slated for a in a 12:00 pm start.
