YORK, PA-Concluding a successful evening for
Spartan athletics, the York College volleyball team dispatched
visiting Lebanon Valley, 3-0. Defeating the
Flying Dutchmen 30-23, 30-21, and 30-25, the green and white
improves to 2-1 on the young season with LVC falling to 3-2.
York took control early on in the first game,
producing an eight-point run that put them ahead
15-8. The spark allowed the green and white to
take 13 of 16 points during the middle of the stanza. Lindsay Schorner
(Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove) tallied kill after
kill as she led the Spartans to the first game victory.
After Lebanon Valley jumped out to a quick
10-5 lead in the second game, the Spartans regained their
composure. Rallying back, York collected eight
of the next nine points capturing a 13-12 lead that they would not
relinquish.
The third frame proved a bit tougher for the
Spartans. Following a 5-0 start that looked like
York would blow out the game, Lebanon Valley retaliated with a 5-0
run of their own. Throughout the rest of the match, York took small
leads but was never able to completely shake the pesky Flying
Dutchmen. A series of long rallies late in the
match fell in York's favor securing the victory for the home
squad.
Schorner produced the best match of her young
Spartan career, amassing 15 kills on 28 attempts for an impressive
.464 hitting percentage. The sophomore outside
hitter also contributed eight digs and two service
aces. Alisha Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa. / Red
Lion) got in on the action compiling nine kills of her
own, hitting .250 for the evening.
Providing her usual compliment of assists,
Katie
Hertz (Glenville, Pa. / Delone Catholic) registered 32
helpers to go along with three kills and four digs.
Defensively, the Spartans were steadied by
Lindsay
Crider (Greencastle, Pa. / James Buchanan) and
Laura
Krajewski (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) as the pair
combined for 19 digs.
The Flying Dutchmen were led by Margaret
Prebula who garnered 13 kills in the losing
effort. Brandi Roth and Christa Vrabel
registered 17 and 14 digs respectively.
Traveling to Muhlenburg this weekend, the
Spartans are set to face Albright at 4:00 pm and FDU-Madison at
7:00 pm on Friday. Although the opponent has yet
to be announced, a third match will be played on Saturday.
