YORK, PA - The 2007 edition of the Spartan Best Western Westgate
Invitational concluded Saturday evening with the host York College
volleyball team owning the title. Sweeping the tournament,
the champion Spartans won all five of their matches and now sport
an overall record of 15-3.
After defeating both Albright and Virginia Wesleyan in
Friday's action, York took to the court against Alvernia
College at 9:30 Saturday morning. The early wake-up call
proved beneficial for the Spartans as they disposed of the
Crusaders in three games 30-14, 30-9, and 30-24.
Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa. / Red Lion)
registered eleven kills to lead the Spartans as Casi Brough
(Hanover, Pa. / Spring Grove) added nine kills of her
own. The always steady Katie Hertz (Glenville, Pa. /
Delone Catholic) paced the York squad with 26 assists.
Lindsay Crider (Greencastle, Pa. / James Buchanan)
recorded 12 digs for the match to go along with 12 assists.
In their second match of the day, the green and white faced a
talented Marietta squad that had defeated Virginia Wesleyan in a
grueling five game match just a few hours prior. Backing up
their three game win earlier in the day, the Spartans took the
victory in four games 30-28, 24-30, 30-13, and 30-26.
Waltermyer and Lindsay Schorner (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring
Grove) combined in an offensive assault as the pair
tallied 18 kills apiece. Brough and Elizabeth
Sempervive (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional)
also got in on the attacking action, hammering a total of 27 kills
between the two. Hertz played her best game of the
invitational registering an incredible 57 assists. Libero
Laura Krajewski (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson)
notched 24 digs to lead the Spartans defensively while Amy
Livelsberger (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) compiled 18
digs of her own.
Having advanced to the championship round, York met familiar foe
Lebanon Valley. The two squads had previously faced each
other three times this season with York winning two of the three
matches. Not wanting to surrender the tournament trophy on
their home court, the green and white came out an inspired bunch
and blanked the Flying Dutchmen 3-0. Brough once again led
the Spartan attack as she hammered home 14 kills on 38 attempts for
an impressive .289 hitting percentage. Schorner finished up
her strong tournament with 13 kills to go along with 21 digs as
Waltermyer also recorded double-digit kills notching ten for the
match. Hertz paced the green and white with 42 assists while
she also compiled 13 digs.
York puts their six match winning streak on the line Tuesday as
they host a traditionally strong Gallaudet squad. The Capital
Athletic Conference match is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
