YORK, PA-The York College volleyball squad had a strong first
day at the Spartan Best Western Westgate Invitational as the
Spartans captured a pair of wins on Friday evening. The Spartans
opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Albright and followed
that with a 3-1 victory over a feisty Virginia Wesleyan squad in
the nightcap. The Albright score was 30-10, 30-18, and 30-18 while
the Virginia Wesleyan score was 25-30, 30-18, 30-25, 30-24. The
Spartans are now 12-3 as they have won three straight.
In the win over Albright, Spartan head coach Sue DuMars made use
of her deep bench as all but one Spartans who dressed, played.
Sophomore standout Lindsay Schorner (Spring Grove, Pa. /Spring
Grove) was again brilliant as she notched 12 kills with only one
error in 22 attempts, good for a hitting percentage of .500.
Schorner also recorded five digs and two service aces for York.
Freshman Alisha Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa. /Red Lion) chipped in with
seven kills and three block assists. Senior Katie Hertz (Glenville,
Pa. / Delone Catholic) set for two games of the match as she
notched 18 assists, seven digs and a kill. Fellow senior Lindsay
Crider (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) set for the third
game and recorded 14 assists. Hertz, senior Amy Livelsberger
(Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic), and senior Laura Krajewski
(Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) each had seven digs to lead the
defensive effort.
Albright was paced by Jessica Higgins as she had five kills and
four digs while Keri Wischner added six assists, four kills, four
digs, and a pair of block assists. Lauren Higgins recorded
seven assists, two kills, two blocks, two digs and a service ace to
the Lion attack.
Against Virginia Wesleyan, the Spartans were paced by Schorner
as she posted an impressive line of 19 kills and 11 digs. She hit
.354 for the match. Waltermyer and sophomore Casi Brough (Hanover,
Pa./Spring Grove) each added 11 kills. Waltermyer did not have an
error as she hit .423 for the match. Brough added eight digs for
the Spartans. Freshman Elizabeth Sempervive (Flemington,
N.J./Hunterdon Central) was the fourth Spartan in double figures
with 10 kills of her own. Hertz was fantastic with 52 assists,
seven kills and seven digs. Livelsberger led the defensive charge
with 16 digs while Crider added 14 digs of her own. Krajewski
contributed 11 digs for York. Freshman Heather Toth (Longmont,
Col./Niwot) added strong play at the net with 2 solo blocks and
three block assists.
The Marlins were led by Rebecca Leedom as she notched 14 kills.
Debbie Sterne contributed 13 kills and four blocks for VWC. Tara
Sutton recorded 22 digs while Melissa Campbell notched 17 of her
own. Setter Grace Geralds had 38 assists in the match for the
Marlins.
The Spartans return to action Saturday morning when they host
Alvernia at 9:30 am. The green and white face Marietta at 1:30 in
their second match of the day. The tournament championship will be
held at 4:30 pm.
