SALISBURY, MD-The York College men's basketball team
posted a 73-62 Capital Athletic Conference victory over
Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, MD.
The Spartans, who have won three straight, improve to 4-3 overall
and, more importantly, 3-1 in the CAC. The Sea Gulls, losers of
seven straight, fall to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Neither team played particularly well early on as the Spartans
had a brief 7-6 lead just over five minutes into the game. The Sea
Gulls recaptured the lead and eventually built their advantage to a
game-high eight, at 19-11, on a Greg Palmer three. The Spartans
played well over the final eight minutes of the half, outscoring
the hosts 22-6 to take a 33-25 lead to the break.
The green and white maintained their lead in the single digits
until sophomore Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra,
Pa./Palmyra) kick started a 10-0 run with a jumper at the
12:03 mark. The spurt increased York's lead to a game-high 18
points with just over eight minutes left in the game. The Spartan
lead got trimmed to ten twice but it would not fall into single
digits the rest of the way.
Senior All-American Chad McGowan (Dallastown,
Pa./Dallastown) poured in a game-high 26 points to pace
the green and white. McGowan was 7-for-12 from the floor while he
was 12-for-20 from the free throw line. His 20 trips to the line
tied a career high for the senior forward. Senior Levi
Winters (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) played well as he
notched 18 points and seven rebounds. Winters canned a pair of
three pointers while he drained all four of his free throw attempts
for the game. Winters collected a game-high four steals for YCP.
Senior Nate Lankford (York, Pa./West York)
was the third Spartan in double figures with 11 points while he
also had six rebounds and three steals. Keefer came off the bench
for the first time this year and had eight points and five boards.
Jonas Vaitkus led the Gulls with 18 points and five boards.
Vaitkus was 7-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw
line. Palmer added 15 points including a trio of three-point field
goals. In addition to his scoring, Palmer pulled down nine rebounds
and handed out three assists. Brandon Abney recorded a
double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
York finished the game shooting 47.2% from the floor but
just 25% from three. York was a little better at the free
throw line in the game as they made 20-of-32, good for a mark of
62.5%. The Spartans committed just 10 turnovers in the game while
they forced Salisbury into 20 miscues which they turned into 25
points. The York bench outscored their Salisbury counterparts 14-3
for the contest.
Salisbury shot 41.7% from the field including 31.6% from
distance. Salisbury was just 6-for-11 from the free throw line for
the game.
The green and white will now be off until December 28 when they
host Nazareth in the first game of the 2007 White Rose City Classic
at the Grumbacher Center. Tip time against Nazareth is set for 6:00
pm.
