YORK, PA-The York College wrestling squad opened their 2007-08
season with a 30-21 non-conference win over McDaniel College on
Wednesday night at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
The Spartans, who are ranked 22nd in the nation, improve to 1-0 for
the campaign while the Green Terror fell to 0-1 for the season.
The Spartans opened the match with a tech fall from returning
All-American Kyle Flickinger (New Oxford, Pa./Bermudian Springs).
Flickinger needed just 3:45 to outscore McDaniel's Jesse Kolb
15-0 at 125 pounds.
The Green Terror took their only lead of the night as Tim Hall
notched a pinfall victory at 133 pounds. That
allowed McDaniel to take a brief 6-5 lead. The Spartans
retook the lead just seconds later as Ryan
Catton (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) was awarded a forfeit
win at 141 pounds as York led 11-6 through three weight classes.
Eric Rush (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) posted a pinfall win over
Tom Boehm as he put Boehm on his back at the 5:57 mark of the 149
pound bout. That increased the Spartan lead to 17-6.
York's John Niedrich (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers
Academy) pushed the Spartan lead to 23-6 as he pinned
Matt Peters in the 157 pound match-up. Niedrich's pin
came just nine seconds into the second period. Brian Alwine
(Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) posted a hard fought 3-1 win at 165
pounds as the York lead grew to 26-6.
McDaniel went on a roll and won the next three weight classes to
draw to within five at 26-21 heading into the heavyweight match.
That match went the way of the green and white as senior Luke
Panizzi (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) posted a 9-0 major
decision to secure the win.
The Spartans return to action at the Kings College Monarch
Invitational on Saturday. The event kicks off at 10:30 am.
