ROANOKE, VA-The York College men's basketball team picked
up their first win of the 2007-2008 campaign on Saturday as they
downed Frostburg State 89-75 in the consolation game of the V
Foundation Classic hosted by Roanoke College. The Spartans improve
to 1-1 with the win while Frostburg falls to 0-2.
The Spartans trailed early in the contest before tying the game
at six just over two minutes into the contest. The Spartans
fashioned a 17-8 spurt that gave them a nine-point lead with 13:49
remaining in the half. The run was capped by a Matty Foley
(Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) triple. Frostburg trimmed the
York led to one on a Jermaine Kapombe jumper with 9:33 left in the
stanza. York kept the lead until Anthony Guy drained a pair of free
throws to tie the game at 31 with 6:40 left in the half. York put
together another sustained run, outscoring the Bobcats 14-2 over
the next four minutes to forge a 45-33 lead. Each team scored five
points the remainder of the half as York took the 50-38 lead to the
break.
The green and white opened the second half with a pair of Levi
Winters (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) buckets to put the Spartans
up by 16. The Spartans remained in control the rest of the game, as
their lead would not fall below 12 in the second half. York managed
to push their lead to as many as 20 in the stanza.
The Spartans were led by Winters, all-tournament team selection,
as the senior had 19 points and 14 rebounds. Winters was 7-for-13
from the floor and 5-for-9 from the free throw line. He also had a
pair of blocked shots and one steal in 35 minutes of work.
Sophomore Nick Brady (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) added 16
points, five rebounds, and two assists in his 27 minutes of action.
Sophomore Jeremy Keefer (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) added 16 points,
nine rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals for the Spartans.
Freshmen Dylan Hoffman (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) and Foley each
chipped in with 10 points while Hoffman had four rebounds and Foley
had three rebounds and two assists. Senior Nate Lankford (York,
Pa./West York) was the sixth Spartan in double figures with 10
points while he also had seven rebounds, three assists, a blocked
shot and a steal.
Jade Belt led Frostburg as he had 17 points and nine rebounds.
Brian Green added 11 points, four assists, and two steals while
Brian Anderson was the third Bobcat in double figures with 10
points.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 44.9% from the floor and
40.7% from three while Frostburg shot 41.3% from the field and just
28.6% from beyond the arc. Neither team was particularly good at
the charity stripe as York shot 64% (16-for-25) and Frostburg shot
61.3% (19-for-31) for the contest. York dominated the glass,
pulling in 50 total rebounds to 37 for the Bobcats.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, November 20 when they
host Gettysburg College in their 2007-08 home opener at the
Grumbacher Center. Tip time for the second game of the
double-header with the Spartan ladies is set for 8:00 pm.
