SALISBURY, MD- The York College volleyball team saw their
outstanding 2007 season come to an end as the Salisbury University
Sea Gulls downed the Spartans 3-0 in the semifinals of the 2007
Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Sea Gulls, who
entered the tournament as the two seed, improve to 27-10 overall as
they advance to the CAC championship match. The Spartans, the
tournament's three seed, had their stellar season come to a
close with a mark of 30-6. The 30 wins tied the Spartan school
record for wins in a season. The loss snaps the Spartans' 11-match
win streak.
The Sea Gulls took game one 30-22 and then followed up with a
30-25 victory in game two.
In the decisive game three, the Sea Gulls jumped out to a quick
6-1 lead. The Spartans closed the gap to 8-4 but the Sea Gulls
quickly pushed the lead to 12-6. York closed to within five at 13-8
but that would be as close as the green and white got the rest of
the game. The Gulls went on a 5-0 spurt to push the lead to 18-8.
York scored four straight to cut the lead to six but multiple
Spartan attack errors prevented the green and white from climbing
back into the match. The Sea Gull lead stayed between six and nine
points before Salisbury finished off the match with a 30-22 win in
game three.
Stacey Krebs led the Gulls with 14 kills, two block solos and
one block assist. Nicole Massarelli added 11 kills and a service
ace. Jaime Marzocchi handed out 23 assists while she also had three
service aces and six kills.
The Spartans were paced by Lindsay Schorner (Spring
Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) as the sophomore standout had 12
kills, a pair of service aces and 10 digs for her 25th
double-double of the year. Fellow sophomore Casi Brough
(Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) chipped in with 11 kills and a
pair of digs. No other Spartan had more that three kills in the
match as York hit a paltry .110 for the match. Senior
Katie Hertz (Glenville, Pa./Delone Catholic)
closed out her Spartan career with 27 assists, 16 digs, one service
ace and one kill. Senior libero Laura Krajewski (Livonia,
Mich./Stevenson) added 12 digs while fellow senior
Lindsay Crider (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan)
chipped in with 10 digs in her final collegiate match.
The Spartans now must bid adieu to Hertz, Krajewski, and Crider
and outside hitter Amy Livelsberger (Hanover, Pa./Delone
Catholic). The foursome provided outstanding leadership to
the green and white en route to three in-season tournament
championships and the 30 wins.
Salisbury advances to face #4 seed St. Mary's College in
the CAC championship match on Saturday, November 3 at 6:00 pm
at the Maggs Center in Salisbury, MD.
