YORK, PA - The York College volleyball team advanced to the
semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament
Tuesday evening with a 3-0 win over visiting Villa Julie.
Defeating the Mustangs by scores of 30-27, 30-24, and 30-21, York
improves to 30-5 while VJC falls to 21-11. With the 30 victories,
the Spartans tie the program record set in 1991.
The first game saw the Spartans pull away gaining as much as an
eight point lead. The green and white seemed in control of the
first frame until the Mustangs rattled off seven straight points to
pull within two at 29-27. Sophomore outside hitter Casi
Brough (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) ended the late rally as
her kill gave York the game one win.
A back-and-forth battle ensued in game number two. Tied at
19, the Spartans took a commanding 25-19 lead resulting from a 6-0
run. Exchanging the game's final points, the green and
white eventually closed out for the 30-24 victory in game
two.
Finishing out the match in the third game, the green and white
jumped out to a 5-1 lead forcing Villa Julie to call an early
time-out. The Mustangs fought back and were down only one
point at 18-17. York secured the victory by taking 12 of the
game's final sixteen points. Sophomore Jaclyn
Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) sent the
Spartan fans home happy, as her sixth kill was the match-winner.
Alishia Waltermyer (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) led
the way for the Spartan attack as she hammered home 12 kills
hitting an impressive .435 for the match. Waltermyer also
contributed on the defensive end with four block assists.
Brough nailed eleven kills while Heather Toth (Longmont,
Col./Niwot) recorded eight of her own as the pair hit .348
and .467 respectively. Katie Hertz (Glenville,
Pa./Delone Catholic) provided her squad with another
outstanding effort handing-out 36 assists to go along with 12 digs.
Alex Mercer paced the Mustang offense registering eleven kills
while Brittany Umetin delivered 37 assists. Julie Olsen
played well defensively for Villa Julie notching 21 digs on the
evening. Alana Eller also got in on the defensive effort
keeping 18 attempts from hitting the floor.
York now moves on to Thursday's CAC semifinal match
against Salisbury University. Game time in Salisbury is set
for 7:00 pm.
