SELINSGROVE, PA-The York College volleyball squad captured their
third tournament championship of the year as they swept the
Crusader Classic on Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna University in
Selinsgrove, PA. The Spartans defeated Rowan University 3-0 in the
first match and they blanked former Capital Athletic Conference foe
Catholic University 3-0, completing a 4-0 weekend for the green and
white. York improves to 27-5 overall as the Spartans have won eight
in a row and 12 of their last 13. The Spartans defeated Rowan
30-16, 30-13, and 30-27 while the scores against Catholic was
30-22, 30-23, and 30-23.
The Spartans were led this weekend by tournament
MVP Katie Hertz (Glenville, Pa. /Delone
Catholic) as the senior setter was outstanding all
weekend. In the win over Rowan, Hertz dished out 24 assists and had
ten digs in two games played. Offensively, freshman Alisha
Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa. /Red Lion) had 14 kills and just one error
in 20 attempts as she hit a blistering .650 for the match.
Sophomore Lindsay Schorner (Spring Grove, Pa. /Spring
Grove) was the other Spartan to reach double figures in
kills with 12 while she also had eight digs. Senior Lindsay
Crider (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) set for one game
and accumulated 19 assists in addition to seven digs. The Spartans
finished the match hitting .266 as a team while they also had six
service aces for the match.
In the victory over Catholic, Hertz played another strong match
with 37 assists, 12 digs, eight kills, and three blocks in the win.
Hertz hit .444 for the match as the Spartans captured their third
tournament title of the year. Schorner led the Spartan offensive
attack with 12 kills and 14 digs for her third double-double of the
tournament. Waltermyer had another solid hitting match with 10
kills and an attack percentage of .318. Sophomore Amanda
Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) led the Spartans'
defensive effort with 20 digs in addition to her seven kills, two
service aces, two blocks, and one assist. Senior Amy
Livelsberger (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) notched 11
digs while senior libero Laura Krajewski (Livonia,
Mich./Stevenson) added ten digs of her own.
Earlier this season, the Spartans won the Muhlenberg College
Buttermaker Classic and the Spartan Best Western
Westgate Invitational.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday in their final
CAC match of the year as they host St. Mary's College.
Game time at the Grumbacher Center is set for 7:00 pm.
