YORK, PA - The York College volleyball team improved to 23-5
(5-2 CAC) on Wednesday evening with a 3-0 defeat of visiting Hood
College (3-20, 0-6 CAC). Winning their fifth Capital Athletic
Conference match of the season, the Spartans took the three games
by scores of 30-14, 30-21, and 30-18.
York started the match strong jumping out to a
9-1 lead in the opening game. After the quick start, the
Spartan lead would not drop below six points for the rest of the
stanza. Lindsay Schorner (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring
Grove) gave her squad the victory in game one with a
tremendous kill that almost shook the floor of Charles Wolf
Gymnasium.
Hood played considerably better in game two,
battling the Spartans throughout. The Blazers led at various
points during the game holding 18-17 advantage late in the
frame. York responded well regaining the lead at 19-18.
Finally the Spartans were able to finish the second game with a 7-0
run that included a great solo block by Alishia Waltermyer
(Brogue, Pa./Red Lion).
Up 2-0, the Spartans got off to another fast
start with a 5-1 lead to open the third game. Unfortunately
for the green and white, Hood was able to fight back once again,
taking an 11-10 lead. The sides then battled back-and-forth
until York snatched 13 of the game's final 15 points to
secure the match victory.
Offensively, Schorner paced the Spartans with
13 kills. The sophomore hit an incredible .423 for the match,
only registering two errors in 26 attempts. Waltermyer,
Casi Brough (Hanover, Pa./Spring Grove) and
Heather Toth (Longmont, Col./Niwot) hammered home
eight, seven and six kills respectively. Katie Hertz
(Glenville, Pa./Delone Catholic) registered 15 assists as
she split time at setter with Chenell Hill (York, Pa./West
York) who handed-out 13 helpers.
York spread out the defensive responsibilities
as 12 players recorded at least one dig. Laura
Krajewski (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) and Lindsay
Crider (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) led the Spartans
with seven digs apiece while Waltermyer had two solo blocks.
