Matt Whitcher enters his fourth season as assistant coach for the 2022 campaign after a four-year career with the Spartans.

Whitcher serves the program as the defensive coordinator and has done so since his first year on staff. Whitcher has coached 11 USILA All-Americans on the defensive side of the ball in his first three seasons on the sidelines. Since he was added to the coaching staff, the Spartans have a record of 41-7 and have made it to the NCAA Quarterfinals twice. Whitcher has directed a defense that has been nationally ranked in caused turnovers, goals against and man-down percentage.

As a player, Whitcher was a two-way midfielder, finishing his career with 119 points on 86 goals and 33 assists, while picking up 125 ground balls and causing 48 turnovers.

In 2018, Whitcher, a team captain, was named a First Team USILA All-American, a Scholar All-American and a First Team All-CAC selection for his efforts on both sides of the ball. In 2017, Whitcher was a Second Team All-CAC selection after finishing with 34 points on 23 goals and 11 assists along with 12 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.

As a short stick defender, Whitcher was part of a defense that held opponents to 6.82 goals per game, as well as part of the man-down unit, en route to three appearances in the NCAA tournament in his four year career.

Whitcher also became the first York College Spartan to be drafted professionally when he joined the Atlanta Blaze of the MLL in the summer of 2019. Whitcher has played three seasons of professional lacrosse, most recently with the Waterdogs Lacrosse Club of the PLL. In the 2021 season, Whitcher played in six games, going 5-1 and helped the Waterdogs to a regular season championship.
