Spartans Stun #4 Salisbury in Double OT

SALISBURY, Md. - The York College field hockey team knocked off their second top-five ranked opponent of the season in a historical upset victory at No. 4 Salisbury on Wednesday night.

Team Records
York: 6-3
#4 Salisbury: 6-2

How It Happened
The Sea Gulls jumped out in front early when Devon DeGregrory deflected a shot by Layla Kent from the point on a penalty in the 12th minute of play.

York managed to answer in the final two minutes of the second quarter with a nifty goal by Michaela Cokinos. The play started with Aliza Staub flicking a pass through two defenders from the left corner into the circle where her pass found Kate Egan. Egan quickly reversed a pass in front of the goal mouth where it deflected off a Salisbury player and settled in front of Cokinos who then punched the ball between the pads of Salisbury goalie Maddie Castaneda.

After surrendering the early goal, Spartan goalie Maddy Merlack went to stop 18-straight Salisbury shots on goal which kept her team's hopes of completing the comeback alive.

With a shootout looming on horizon, the Spartans were awarded a penalty corner with 41 seconds left in the second overtime period. Kelbie Linebaugh inserted the ball to the top of the circle to Olivia Miller who passed left to Staub who had her shot blocked. Linebaugh secured the loose ball and put a shot on target which was saved by Castaneda. The rebound came right back to Linebaugh who swatted the ball out of the air back towards the goal and this time it went flying past Castaneda for the dramatic game-winning tally.
