#8 Women’s Lacrosse Takes Down #15 Messiah to Secure Fifth-Straight Commonwealth Crown

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The second-seed York women's lacrosse team knocked off top-seed Messiah, 11-5, on Saturday in the Commonwealth Final to clinch their fifth-consecutive Commonwealth title.

Spartan senior midfielder Sydney Mentzer was named the Commonwealth Championship MVP after leading all players with five points on three goals and two assists to go along with three draw controls on the day.

Highlights
The Spartans put together a stifling defensive effort as they held the Falcons to a season-low five goals and handed Messiah their largest margin of defeat this season. The Falcons also committed the second-most turnovers (19) of the season with York forcing 10 of them.

Mentzer led York's first-half offensive rally with three goals and an assist as the Spartans led 6-2 at halftime. The Spartans then put the game away with a five-goal run to start the fourth quarter with Kiera McPhillips scoring a pair during that span.

The Spartans have earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship. They will find out who their next opponent will be and where they will be playing following the NCAA Selection Show which will air on Monday at 10:30 a.m. on ncaa.com.

Notes
York is now 12-8 all-time against Messiah and has won six of the last seven meetings … the Spartans are 2-1 against the Falcons in conference postseason matchups with a 1-1 record in Commonwealth Finals … York is a six-time conference champion and has won the last five-consecutive Commonwealth crowns … the Spartans are 12-1 in Commonwealth postseason play since joining the league in 2021.
