Spartan Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Spartan softball team went north to take on the University of Scranton in the regular-season finale. York split the twinbill, winning game one 11-4, before dropping game two, 8-5. 

Game One

How It Happened
The Green and White plated the first runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Gretchen Barstad doubled to right field, scoring Danella Silagy. Noelle Smith brought in Barstad on a double of her own. 

Scranton took the lead in the bottom half, scoring three runs. 

The Green and White regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Silagy tied it up on a RBI double. Barstad followed with a two-run home run, giving York a 5-3 lead. 

Silagy plated the sixth Spartan run on a groundout in the top of the fifth inning. 

Barstad and Smith added three more insurance runs on a RBI single and two-run double, respectively. 

The Royals added their fourth and final run in the bottom half of the fifth. 

Smith continued to slug for the Spartans, hitting a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, pushing the Spartans to an 11-4 victory. 

Natalie Rietema started in the circle for York. She tossed six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks. Rietema fanned 10 Royals. 

Courtney Freese pitched an inning in relief. She allowed just one hit and struck out the side.

How it Happened 
York scored first in the first inning, as Gretchen Barstad doubled, scoring Silagy. 

Scranton quickly knotted it up in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly. 

The Spartans regained the lead in the top of the third when Barstad scored on a Royal error. Alexis McDonaugh extended the Spartans lead with a two-run single up the middle. 

Scranton made it a 4-3 game with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. 

McDonaugh added an insurance run for the Green and White in the top of the fifth, extending the Spartans lead to 5-3. 

Scranton went on to tie it up in the bottom half of the fifth. The Royals scored five unanswered, claiming the 8-5 victory. 

Courtney Freese started in the circle for the Green and White. She pitched 5.1 innings, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and three walks. Freese struck out four. 

Barstad came in for relief, pitching 0.2 innings, recording a clean sheet. 

Spartan Notes
York is now 2-2 all-time against Scranton… The Green and White have only faced the Royals on the road… Offensively, the top three in the order combined for a .652 (15-23) batting average in the doubleheader. 
 
Up Next
York will now head into postseason competition, competing in the MAC Commonwealth Softball Championship. The Spartans are slated to face Eastern, Thursday. The tournament is hosted by Messiah University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
