Troyer’s 45 Leads Spartans to Victory in Season Opener

OBERLIN, Ohio - The York College men's basketball team pulled out a nail-biting 84-82 victory over George Fox to open the season on Friday at the Oberlin College Tip-Off Tournament.

Junior guard Ben Troyer was the only Spartan to score in double-figures and did so with a career-best 45 points. That performance now stands as the second-highest single game point total in program history, two points shy of Jeff Mann's record of 47 set in the 1991-92 season.

Team Records
York: 1-0 (20-7 last season
George Fox: 0-1 (4-21 last season)

Highlights
The first half went back-and-forth until the Spartans opened up a 12-point lead, their largest of the half, on a Ben Troyer fast break layup off a steal with 3:13 left in the opening half. The York lead dipped to nine after the halftime break as they led, 44-35. Troyer led all players with 25 points on a 9-for-15 effort from the floor in the first 20 minutes as the Spartan shot a blistering 48.5% from the flor as a team. Jamar Mitchell led George Fox in scoring with eight points as the Bruins shot 37.1% from the floor.

The Spartans maintained a comfortable lead throughout a large portion of the second half and stretched the margin to 14, the largest of the night by either team, with 9:45 left on a Drew Pape trey. York led by 10 with just 1:31 left after Theo Burke knocked his second of two free throws, but the tide suddenly turned in George Fox's favor as the Bruins went on an 8-1 run over the next 60 seconds to trim the Spartan lead down to one, 81-80.

Burke pushed the York lead up to three with 24 seconds left on another pair of made free throws, but the Bruins responded on the ensuing possession with a Mitchell jumper. Troyer drew a foul with eight seconds left and converted just one of his two free throws which gave the Bruins the ball for one last gasp to complete the comeback.

The Bruins were able to hustle down the floor following Troyer's miss and Donovan Cooks had a good look at the rim from the left block. As Cooks went up for the shot, Ethan Glass managed to get enough of a hand on the ball that it fell out of Cooks' grasp and into the waiting hands of Troyer as time expired,
