#17 York Outclasses #21 Messiah in Commonwealth Clash

YORK, Pa. - The No. 17 York College field hockey team scored four-straight goals to put away No. 21 Messiah for a huge Commonwealth victory at home on Wednesday night.

Team Records
#21 Messiah: 10-6 (6-1 MACC)
#17 York: 13-4 (6-1 MACC)

How It Happened
After a scoreless first quarter, the Spartans claimed the game's first goal in the 25th minute of play when Katelyn Landis finished a feed from Olivia Miller on a penalty corner. York proceeded to score twice more in the next nine minutes of game time, including a pair 1:02 apart, to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the 34th minute of play. Kate Egan finished a beautiful assist by Arin Lee by slipping a shot past a sprawling Joy Lippert for the second goal of the game, and later Miller blasted a shot past Lippert on a penalty corner.

Kelbie Linebaugh put the game out of reach in the 48th minute after she swatted the ball out of the air and into the cage to put the Spartans up, 4-0. The Falcons responded a minute later and finally got on the board when Ellie Lefever scored her eighth goal of the season. Taylor Wielechowski later scored to cut the Messiah deficit in half, but with less than two minutes left to play, the comeback bid lacked enough time to fully develop.

Notes
The win by York puts the Spartans in a three-way tie for first place in the Commonwealth standings with Messiah and Stevenson, and firmly in contention for the No. 1 seed for the postseason tournament … York is now 7-19 all-time against Messiah since the series began in 1969, but the Spartans have won three of the last four meetings … the two-goal loss by Messiah is their largest margin of defeat in a conference contest since losing 3-1 to Elizabethtown in 2013 … the Falcons saw their seven-game win streak snapped, while the Spartans extended their win streak to four … Messiah's eight shots on the night is their second fewest single game total this season … York has held 11 opponents to less than 10 shots this season.

Up Next
The Spartans will be back at Kinsley Field on Wednesday for a Commonwealth heavyweight tilt with No. 23 Messiah at 7 p.m.
