#20 Spartan Field Hockey Left Stunned by #4 Stevenson in OT

YORK, Pa. - The No. 20 York College field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking, 1-0, defeat to No. 4 Stevenson in overtime at home on Wednesday night.

Team Records
#4 Stevenson: 12-0 (3-0 MACC)
#20 York: 9-4 (3-1 MACC)

How It Happened
A highly competitive game boiled down to one brief moment in the third minute of overtime. Gracyn Catalano found a streaking Hailey Mertz up the left side and sprung her free of the defense with a well-placed through ball. Mertz corralled the pass and then slipped a shot past  Maddy Merlack in a one-on-one for the game-winning goal.

The Spartans had dominated most of the first half and produced many scoring chances as they out-shot the Mustangs, 5-2, including a 4-0 margin in the first quarter. York also owned a 7-3 advantage in corners throughout the game, including three in the third quarter. York put all three of their shots on goal in the third quarter, including a pair of quality looks by Aliza Staub on two penalty corners, but Jordan Vradenburgh came up with the saves on both attempts.

Notes
York is now 27-7 all-time against Stevenson … the Mustangs have won three of the last four meetings, including the last two by 1-0 margins … the Spartans are 2-3 against ranked opponents this season, including a record of 2-1 against top-five opponents … York is 2-1 in overtime games this season, all of which are against an opponent ranked inside the top-five.

Up Next
The Spartans will be back at Kinsley Field on Saturday for a Commonwealth clash with Albright at 1 p.m.
