How It Happened
The Spartans started quick, going on a 7-0 run to begin the game thanks to buckets from three different scorers. York would grow their lead to nine, their largest of the game, courtesy of a layup by Ava Snyder. Gettysburg was able to respond, ending the first quarter on an 6-0 run to cut the York lead to just three (11-8) after one quarter of play.
The ending of the first quarter gave a preview of how the rest of the game would go, with Gettysburg tying the game at 13 and never looking back. The Bullets outscored the Spartans 27-13 in the second quarter alone thanks to their strong interior play as they out-gained York 20-12 in first half paint points. Spartan guard Alaina Neal hit two free throws with just 13 seconds to go before break to cut the Spartan deficit to single digits, 32-24. Gettysburg was quick to respond, drilling a three with seven seconds remaining in the half to go into the break leading by 11, 35-24.
The second half was much of the same as the first, with Gettysburg dominating the interior. The Spartans continued to battle, but Gettysburg was able to string together too many mini runs throughout the second half. York faced a deficit as big as eighteen in the third quarter and was outscored by a total of seven in the period. The fourth quarter remained an uphill battle for the Spartans, finding themselves down by as many as 24 with just over 2 minutes left to play (67-43). Ariana Phillips would end up knocking down two free-throws with forty seconds to go, making the final 67-45 in favor of Gettysburg.
