Box Score SALISBURY, MD – The York College women's soccer squad was dominant in the second half but a sluggish first half cost them a win as they tied former Capital Athletic Conference rival Salisbury University 1-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Salisbury, Maryland.
The Sea Gulls scored first late in the half and the Spartans notched the equalizer just over three minutes later. The second half saw the Spartans carry the play and put a number of close misses on the Salisbury goal, but ultimately, York had to settle for the tie.
The Spartans are now 5-3-1 overall while the Sea Gulls are 1-7-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Salisbury had the better of the play early in the first half. The Spartans slowly started to even the play as the half progressed.
• The Sea Gulls broke the scoring ice in the 36th minute of play. The Sea Gulls played a ball into the box that got pinged around between a few Sea Gulls and a few Spartan defenders. The ball squired away to a free spot on the box where Jordan Edwards picked up the loose ball and drove it home for the 1-0 Salisbury lead.
• York needed just under three and a half minutes to respond as they drew a penalty kick.
Gabby Jennings carried the ball into the right-hand side of the box. From there, she hit a cutting
Anna Sis who drew the penalty as she was taken down from behind in the box.
Mia Mervis stepped up and drove home the penalty kick, tying the game at one.
• The Sea Gulls held a 6-2 edge in total shots and a 3-2 margin in shots on goal while both teams had two corner kicks. York was called for offsides three times in the first half.
• The Spartans came out of the break more assertive as they took the play to the Sea Gulls. York had the majority of the second half possession but couldn't covert that possession to great goal scoring chances.
Allysa Hartman had a pair of near misses with just over 20 minutes in left in regulation as the game remained tied at one.
• The Spartans out shot the Sea Gulls 11-2 in the second half including 2-0 in on-goal shots. York also had a 4-1 bulge in corner kicks. York finished the game with a 13-8 advantage in the shot total and 4-3 in shots on goal. The Spartans also doubled up the Sea Gulls in corners, 6-3.
