How It Happened
• The Spartans could not have gotten off to a better start as a freshman
Brady Watts won the open face off, raced to goal and finished off the first chance of the game, seven seconds into the match. The game would settle in and play would go back and forth until the Red Dragons tied the game on a Nick Stoecker goal with 3:16 left in the quarter. Sean Kavanagh gave the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead with a goal with just ten seconds left in the opening quarter.
• York had a bunch of great opportunities in the opening quarter but Cortland goalie Travis Wagner made seven first quarter saves to keep the Spartans at bay despite York squeezing off 13 shots.
• Cortland scored back-to-back goals in a 1:29 span in the second quarter to push out to a 4-1 lead. Ryan Scanlon and Kavanagh scored for the Red Dragons and they slowly wrestled control of the game away from the Spartans. York got back on the board at the 5:20 mark as
Nate Schilling recorded the goal off a
Coleton Mahorney assist. Cortland out-shot York 9-5 in the quarter including 4-1 in shots on goal.
• Schilling opened the third quarter scoring as
Davis Fisher found Schilling from the X and the freshman one-timed the shot to cut York's deficit to 4-3, 54 seconds into the second half. Cortland responded just over three minutes later as Sam Rothman scooped up a loose ball off a Spartan turnover and drilled home the opportunity to give the Red Dragons a 5-3 lead.
• The Spartans had a two-man up power play but got just one shot off as they couldn't take advantage of the golden opportunity midway through the third quarter. Two possessions later, the Spartans got a turnover and a fast break that
Gavin Gismondi finished off at the 7:00 mark to draw the Spartans back to within one at 5-4.
• York cashed in on a power play with 4:38 left in the third as
Colby Berard notched a behind the back goal off a Gismondi pass, knotting the game at five. Cortland needed just 31 seconds to retake the lead as Wagner made a fantastic save that led to a fast break opportunity for the Red Dragons. Kole Stuver finished off the break, giving Cortland a 6-5 lead in the back-and-forth game. Cortland struck again with ten seconds left in the third quarter as Rothman notched another goal to push the lead back to two goals, 7-5. The Red Dragons then got a dagger goal with 1.3 seconds left in the quarter as Cortland won the face off and got a Joe DeLaney goal, pushing the lead to three heading to the fourth.
• With the clock ticking away in the fourth, the Red Dragons added an important goal from Ryan Scanlon with 8:56 left in the game. The Spartans finally halted the Cortland run with a Mahorney goal with 3:22 left in the game but the Spartans couldn't draw any closer as their 11-game win streak was halted by Cortland.
