CAMP LEJEUNE, NC – The York College men's golf team finished 12
th of 23 teams at the 52
nd Annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Invitational in Camp LeJeune, North Carolina.
The Spartans finished the three-day tournament with a score of 896. They shot 291 on Friday, 301 on Saturday and 304 on Sunday. Shenandoah and Sandhills CC tied for the team title with a score of 873. Guilford was third at 875 followed by Oglethorpe (879) in fourth and Franklin & Marshall (882) in fifth place.
Senior
Gavin Ganter led the way for the Spartans as he finished tied for 19
th with a tournament score of 220. Ganter was brilliant in round one as he was a co-leader on Friday. He carded a four-under 68 to be among the leaders. Ganter had four birdies on the front and then was even on the back for his 68. The senior shot 78 on Saturday but bounced back on Sunday with a two-over-par 72. Ganter was one-over on the front on Sunday and one over on the back with his final nine marred by a triple on 12. He finished off the tournament with back-to-back birdies on his final two holes of the day.
Junior
Jacob Fripp was York's second finisher as he tied for 33
rd in the field. Fripp recorded a three-day score of 223. He fired a two-over-par 74 on Friday followed by a one-over-par 73 on Saturday. Fripp closed out his tournament with a four-over 76 on Sunday. On Friday, Fripp was three-over on the front but two under on the back including birdies on two of his final three holes. On Saturday, Fripp was two-over on the front but again was one-under on the back for his 73. Fripp closed out his tournament with a 38 on the front and a one-over 38 on the back.
Senior
Jason Velez finished tied for 56
th as he concluded the tournament with a score of 226. He shot an even par 72 on Friday followed by back-to-back 77's on Saturday and Sunday. Velez got off to a quick start on the weekend as he carded a two-under 33 on Friday's front nine. He shot a two-over 39 on the back for his 72. On Saturday, Velez shot 37 on the front including a triple and a double but he did have three birdies. He was three over on the back for his 77. Sunday's round was the same score but in a much different way. He was two-over on the front with two bogeys and seven pars. On the back, he had four bogeys, one birdie and four pars.
Sophomore
Thomas O'Connell finished tied for 70
th with a three-day score of 230. O'Connell notched a 77 on Friday followed by a 76 on Saturday and another 77 on Sunday. He began the tournament with an even-par 35 on Friday's front nine followed by a 42 on the back. On Saturday, O'Connell was two-over on each nine for his four-over 76. On Sunday, O'Connell was two-over on the front and three over on the back as he concluded the tournament with a birdie on 18.
Freshman
Adam Gorman was York's fifth tournament participant as he tied for 90
th with a three-day score of 236. Gorman shot 77 during Friday's first round. He carded a three-over 75 on Saturday before falling back with an 84 on Sunday. He was very good on the opening nine of the tournament as he was one-under. He shot 43 on the back for his 77. On Saturday, he was even on the front and was three-over on the back for his best score of the weekend.
The Spartans conclude their regular season on April 18 and 19 when they head to the Gettysburg Spring Shootout at the Penn National Golf Club – Founders Course in Fayetteville, PA. Friday's round begins at 12:00 pm followed by Saturday's 18 holes at 11:00 am.
