Spartan Softball Season Ends with Two Losses at Alvernia

READING, Pa. - The Spartan softball team saw their season come to a close on Sunday with a pair of losses in a Commonwealth doubleheader at Alvernia.

York entered the day needing just one more win to clinch one of the four spots in the Commonwealth Softball Championship. The two losses put the Spartans in a tie with Alvernia for fourth place as both teams finished 7-7 in conference play and the Golden Wolves claimed the final playoff spot on a head-to-head tiebreaker.

How It Happened
The Spartan bats were on fire to start the game as they racked up five hits in the first inning, but York only managed to get two runs across while leaving three runners stranded. Emma Wade drove in the first run with a double to right center to score Gretchen Barstad. Kate Miller knocked in the second Spartan run with a single to left center which brought Alexis McDonaugh in from second.

The Golden Wolves countered in the third inning with a pair of runs on two hits to tie the game, 2-2. After a leadoff walk, Alexia Fitzgerald came around to score on a Brooke Hauck single up the middle. Hauck later scored the tying run as Angelina Sponheimer poked a single up the middle as well.

The Spartans edged out in front, 3-2, in the fourth inning after Jordyn Woodling hit a sacrifice fly to left center which brought in Miller from third.

A major momentum shift occurred in the sixth inning when Alverrnia scored four runs on just two hits while the Spartan defense committed three errors. The Golden Wolves did most of their damage with two outs as they scored three of their four runs which all came on back-to-back fielding errors by the left side of the Spartan infield.

After starting out strong and putting three runs on the board through the first four innings, the Spartan offense went silent down the stretch as they only managed to muster up one hit throughout the final three frames and left three runners stranded in the seventh.

GAME 2
Alvernia 7, York 5

Pitchers of Record
WP: Kelsey Racine (9-6)
LP: Barstad, Gretchen (5-5)

How It Happened
Both teams put runs on the board in the first inning, beginning with the Spartans who hung two runs on two hits. Rylee Dreyer scored the game's first run on an Alvernia throwing error following an infield single by Gretchen Barstad. Barstad later came around to score on an Alexis McDonaugh double. Alvernia racked up three hits in the bottom half of the first frame, but only managed to score one run as York owned a 2-1 lead through one inning of play.

York went back to work in the second inning and posted two more runs with three hits to extend their lead, 4-1. Both runs were scored following a Jordyn Woodling infield single as she drove in Bri McKeown from third and Morgan Sauers scored from second following a throwing error by the shortstop.

The Golden Wolves came howling back in the bottom of the second inning as they scored four runs on four hits to take a 5-4 lead and left the bases loaded as they could have added more. In addition to timely hits, Alvernia also took advantage of some Spartan miscues as York used three different pitchers in the half inning with a combined total of three walks and two wild pitches.

The Spartans rallied back in the third inning and knotted up the score 5-5 with a Danella Silagy RBI-double to left center. York had an opportunity to retake the lead, but left a pair of runners stranded which would end up proving costly in the end.

After two-consecutive scoreless frames, AU got back on the board in the fifth inning with two runs on two hits to take a 7-5 lead. Alexia Fitzgerald put the Wolves back on top with an RBI-double to left field and later came in to score on a Brooke Hauck single to left.

Alvernia's two runs in the fifth wound up being more than enough to get the job done as AU pitcher Kelsey Racine no-hit the Spartans through the final four innings. Racine took over the pitching duties to start the fourth inning and went on to toss four shutout innings with two strikeouts and one walk while her defense made 10 outs behind her in her hitless outing which ended York's season.
