YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis team picked up a big MAC Commonwealth win on a beautiful Wednesday in York as they downed Stevenson 6-1 at the Myers Tennis Complex.
The Spartans improve to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the league while the Mustangs fall to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
York got off to a great start in the three doubles matches as they swept the Mustangs. The first doubles duo of
Maddi Haggerty and
Bri Serruto posted a 6-3 win to start it off for York. The second doubles tandem of
Kennedy Conte and
Hannah Sult earned a 6-3 win of their own to capture the overall doubles point for York.
Caraline Junkin and
Mia Leonhartt combined to outlast Makenzie Dicke and Tiffany Njemanze 7-5 in the third doubles match.
Sult started singles with a win by retirement victory over Ariella Stepleman in the second singles match. Haggerty followed with a smooth 6-2, 6-0 third singles win. Stevenson broke up the shutout with a sixth singles win but Leonhartt posted a 6-1, 6-3 fifth singles win to clinch the match.
Serruto fashioned a methodical 6-3, 6-2 win over Shelby Carter in the first singles match to give York a 5-1 lead. Conte closed out the win by outlasting Dicke in the match of the day, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4, in the fourth singles match for the Green and White.
Serruto now leads the Spartans with six wins for the year in singles play while Haggerty and Leonhartt both have five singles victories.
The Spartans have a busy weekend ahead of them as they close out their 2024-25 regular season. York travels to Hood on Saturday for a league match followed by a trip to St. David's, PA to take on Eastern on the final day of the regular season. Saturday's match is slated for a 12:00 pm start while Sunday's clash will kick off at 1:00 pm.
