WILLIAMSBURG, VA – The York College men's golf team kicked off their spring season with a third place finish at the Ruckus Tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia. The tournament was held at Williamsburg National Golf Club – the Jamestown Course. In addition to the third place team finish, junior
Jacob Fripp was the tournament's individual medalist.
The Spartans shot a two day total of 588 as they were a shot out of second and eight behind tournament champion Drew. Bowdoin finished second with a score of 587 while Hartford placed fourth at 591 followed by Bridgewater (Va.) in fifth with a score of 595.
The Spartans shot a 302 during Saturday's first round and then were 16 strokes better on Sunday with a score of 286 which was the best in the 11-team field.
Fripp led the way for the Spartans as he tied for first in the tournament with a two day score of 142. He won the individual title as he shot a two-under-par 70 in the second round, bettering the two players he was tied with at the end of the round. Fripp carded an even-par 72 in the opening round before his Sunday round. Fripp was great down the stretch on Sunday to earn the tournament win as he shot a blistering three-under 33 on his final nine of the weekend.
Senior
Jason Velez finished tied for fourth in the tournament as he shot a two-day total of 144. Velez began his tournament with a four-over-par 76 on Saturday. The senior then shot the round of the tournament with a four-under-par 68 on Sunday. Velez went two under on the front nine and followed that with a two-under 34 on the back for his 68. He had six birdies and two bogeys on his round including three straight birdies on 12, 13, and 14 on Sunday.
Thomas O'Connell and
Adam Gorman were the next two Spartan finishers as they tied for 22
nd with a tournament score of 153. O'Connell shot a 74 on Saturday and followed that with a 79 to closed out his tournament. Gorman shot 80 on Saturday but had a seven shot improvement as he carded a one-over-par 73 on Sunday.
Senior
Gavin Ganter was York's fifth tournament participant as he finished tied for 42
nd with a score of 162. Ganter shot an uncharacteristic 87 on Saturday but he rebounded nicely on Sunday with a three-over-par 75 to help the Spartans climb the team standings on Sunday.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they head to the Bridges Golf Club to participate in the McDaniel Spring Invitational. The two day tournament kicks off at noon on Saturday in Abbottstown, PA.
