Softball Opens Commonwealth Play with a Sweep

The Spartans downed Albright 4-2 and 10-2 on Saturday at home

YORK, PA  - The York College opened up their home slate and their MAC Commonwealth schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Albright on Saturday at Spartan Stadium.
York won game one 4-2 and then completed the sweep with a 10-2 five inning win over the Lions.
The Spartans improve to 4-8 overall and 2-0 in the league while the Lions are now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

How It Happened
• The Lions got on the board first as they scored on a passed ball into the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Albright added on in the third as Monica Hernandez scored on a Katie Behler RBI ground out for the 2-0 lead. It could have been worse but Natalie Rietema got a pair of strikeouts with Lions and second and third and just one out.
• The Spartans finally got on the board in the fourth inning. Gretchen Barstad drew a lead-off walk in the inning. She got to stroll the rest of the way around the bases as Emma Wade blasted a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field wall, tying the game at two.
• Albright pitcher Gabriella Weiss got the first two outs of the fifth inning on three pitches but Barstad doubled to start the rally. Wade then hit another 3-2 pitch over the right field wall to give York a 4-2 lead.
• The Lions got the lead-off hitter on in the sixth and moved her to third with a pair of sacrifice bunts but Rietema got a ground out to short to end the threat. The Lions loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh but Rietema got a routine fly out to left to end the game.

How It Happened
• York opened the scoring by batting around in the first. The first run came home on an Emma Wade sacrifice fly to score Jordyn Woodling who opened the game with a double down the right field line. Alexis McDonaugh drove home a pair with a double to left center for the 3-0 lead. Emma Keller later scored McDonaugh with an RBI single to right.
• Gretchen Barstad made it 6-0 in the second as she ripped a two-run homer to center for her third home run of the year. Keller drove home two more in the second with a two-run single up the middle to score Wade and McDonaugh for the 8-0 lead.
• McDonaugh made it 9-0 with an RBI double to right in the third as the Spartans were on cruise control. The Lions finally reached Barstad for a pair of unearned runs as the Spartans committed a two-run error with two outs in the frame, allowing the Lions to break up the shutout.
• The Spartans loaded the bases in the fifth and reached the eight-run margin of victory with a McDonaugh sacrifice fly to right as the Spartans picked up their third straight win with the five-inning victory.

York improves to 15-13 all-time with Albright as the Spartans have now won eight straight in the series … the ten runs in game two is the Spartans' second-highest run total of the season (14 vs. LeTourneau in game two) … York drew a season-high nine walks in game two … York struck out just one time in the two games … York was clean defensively as they made just one error in the two games … York now has multiple home runs in three games this year … York had a season-high two sacrifice flies in game two … Gretchen Barstad walked a season-low two in the game two win … York struck out 13 Lions in 12 innings of work on Saturday … Barstad's two runs allowed (both unearned) were a season low for a Spartan pitcher this year … York allowed just seven hits in 12 innings of action … Barstad and Emma Wade both have four game hit streaks for York … Wade and Jordyn Woodling each have four multi-RBI games … Alexis McDonaugh has a current six game streak of reaching base safely.
 
Up Next
The Spartans return to Spartan Stadium on Thursday when they host Penn State Harrisburg in a non-conference doubleheader in York. Game one is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
