Third Quarter Rally Lifts York to Comeback Win at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The York women's basketball team pulled out a second-half comeback for a 60-53 Commonwealth victory at Stevenson on Wednesday night.

The Spartans erased a nine-point first half deficit with a 22-point third quarter scoring performance to pull out a comeback road win and the season sweep of the Mustangs.

Team Records
York 13-7 (6-3 MACC)
Stevenson 7-13 (2-7 MACC)

How It Happened
The Spartans came up empty on their first six possessions to open the game until Taylor Burda knocked a three with midway through the first quarter on her first shot attempt of the game which made the score 4-3 in favor of the Mustangs. Burda would go on to lead all players with six points in the opening quarter, but Stevenson held a 13-10 advantage on the scoreboard through the first 10 minutes of play. Both offenses struggled to gain traction early as each shot under 30% in the first quarter, but the Mustangs compensated for the lack of offense by hitting the boards hard as they racked up a 16-8 edge in rebounds.

The Mustangs opened up a 22-14 lead just before the midway point of the second quarter which was aided by a 2-for-8 shooting performance by the Spartans from the field during that span. York and Stevenson went on to score nine points each through the last 4:34 of the quarter as the Mustangs took a 31-23 lead into the halftime break. Burda also led all scorers in the second quarter as she poured in seven points to finish the first half with 13.

The Spartan comeback was on as the third quarter got underway and Alyssa Hocker ignited the rally with a pair of three-pointers in the first 70 seconds of the period. The Mustangs initially maintained a buffer, but then York went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes led by a pair of buckets by Makenna Zimmerman which gave the Spartans their first lead of the night (40-39) and they never trailed the rest of the way.

York outscored the Mustangs 22-14 in the third quarter on an effective 9-for-19 (47.4%) performance from the field. Despite just shooting 31.3% and going 0-for-6 from three-point range in the third quarter, the Mustangs managed to find a little rhythm late in the period and scored twice in the final minute to knot the score at 45-45 heading into the fourth.

The Spartans out-scored the Mustangs 8-2 through the first six minutes of the fourth quarter as the comeback win started to become reality for York. The Mustangs went on to cut their deficit to three points with three minutes to go, but York finished the game on a 7-3 run to seal the victory. York's defense held Stevenson to just eight points in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs shot 3-for-13 from the field. Offensively, Hocker and Zimmerman helped lock down the win as the two combined for 10 of York's 15 fourth quarter points.
