Spartans Fall to Widener in Commonwealth Semifinals

York was unable to overcome Widener's big first half

CHESTER, PA – The 2024-25 York College women's basketball season came to a close on Wednesday night with a 76-64 setback at Widener University in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals.
The Pride advance to face the top seeded Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth championship game. The Falcons recorded a 78-52 victory over Alvernia in the other semifinal.
York concludes the year 16-10 overall while the Pride improve to 18-8.
 
How It Happened
• The Pride jumped on the Spartans early with an 11-2 spurt to start the game. The Spartans got themselves right back into the game with an 8-0 run fueled by four points from Morgan Adams, cutting the Pride lead to 11-10. The Pride closed out the first quarter with an 11-2 run over the final 3:57 as they took a 22-12 lead after ten minutes of play.
• After Breana Grim hit a three to start the second quarter, the Pride hit York with a quick 7-0 spurt to push the lead to 29-15. York scored ten of the next 15 points of the game, trimming their deficit to nine midway through the second. Widener finished off the half with a 9-2 run as they took a 43-27 lead at the break.
• The Spartans spent the second half trying to get themselves back into the game. York got to within 13 at 50-37 but Widener responded by scoring 10 of the next 11 points of the game to push out to a 60-38 advantage with 3:46 left in the quarter. Widener took a 64-43 lead to the fourth quarter.
• York kept competing in the fourth but their deficit would be too much to overcome. The Spartans outscored the Pride 21-12 in the fourth quarter as they ended up falling by 12 points.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 31.7% (20-for-63) from the field including 7-of-25 (28%) from three … York was 17-for-19 (89.5%) from the stripe … Widener shot 48.1% (26-for-54) from the floor including 3-for-17 (17.6%) from downtown … the Pride went 21-for-29 (72.4%) from the line … Widener had a 46-29 margin on the glass including 12-9 advantage in offensive rebounds … Widener had a 16-4 bulge in second chance points … the Pride also had a 40-24 advantage in paint points … York turned the ball 14 times which cost the 13 points while the Spartans turned Widener's 19 turnovers into 19 points … the Spartans never led in the game … Mia Robbins led the way for Widener with 16 points and 10 rebounds … Robbins was 7-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the stripe while she also had three blocked shots … Lindsay Kutz also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists while she also had four assists, a blocked shot and a steal … Kaitlyn Kearney came off the bench to record 15 points while Jayla Daniels had 12 points for the Pride.
 
Spartan Notes
The Pride took two out of three this season with the home team winning convincing in each game … the Pride now hold an 9-3 advantage in the all-time series … the Spartans were great at home this year with a mark of 10-3 but were just 4-7 on the road … York lost three of their last four of the year … the Spartans were led by Alyssa Hocker and Breana Grim as they each notched 17 points … Hocker added two rebounds and one steal in 35 minutes of work … Grim recorded seven rebounds and four assists in her 29 minutes of action … Morgan Adams, who returned to the lineup after a late season illness, closed out the year with 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots in 20 minutes … Taylor Burda was the fourth Spartan in double figures with 10 points, three rebounds and a steal.

The loss ends the Spartan season. It also concludes a great run for Alyssa Hocker, Taylor Burda, Taylor Brenneman, Georgia Panopoulos and Morgan Adams.
