Spartans Earn Dramatic First Win in Gambino Debut

Mia Leonhartt won the decisive singles match to get the Spartans a win over St. Mary's

YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis team kicked off the spring portion of their schedule with a dramatic 4-3 win over St. Mary's College on a brisk Saturday afternoon in York.

The overall match came down to the racket of Mia Leonhartt and she came through with a three-set win for the clinching team point.

The Spartans improve to 3-2 overall as they gave new head coach Nate Gambino his first Spartan women's tennis victory. The Seahawks fall to 1-3 overall.

The Seahawks earned the doubles point by winning the second and third doubles matches. Bri Serruto and Maddi Haggerty combined to win the first doubles match 6-3 but St. Mary's took the 1-0 lead heading to singles play.

St. Mary's pushed the lead to 2-0 as they won the sixth singles match to open singles play. The Seahawks increased their advantage to 3-0 with a first singles win. Hannah Sult started the comeback with a thrilling 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 second singles win to get York on the board. Haggerty cut the lead to 3-2 with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 third singles win. Kennedy Conte tied the match at three with a 6-4, 6-3 fourth singles win, setting the stage for Leonhartt to win the match.

Leonhartt won the first set 6-4 before dropping a 6-2 second set. She closed out the win in an emphatic manner with a 6-1 third set win.

The win for Gambino was his first as the Spartan head coach after taking over the program in December.

York returns to action on Saturday, March 1 when they head to Middletown, PA to take on Penn State Harrisburg in a non-conference. The match is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
