Spartans Drop Second-Straight With Trip to Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – The York women's basketball team suffered their second-straight road loss with a 72-55 setback at Widener on Wednesday night.

The Spartans and Pride have both clinched spots in the Commonwealth postseason tournament with one game left to play and both still have a shot at clinching the No. 2 seed. Final seeding will be sorted out following Saturday's results.

Team Records
York 15-9 (8-5 MACC)
Widener 16-8 (9-4 MACC)

How It Happened
The Pride came out firing and racked up a 22-11 lead on a 9-for-19 (47.4%) shooting performance through one quarter of play. After a Taylor Burda free throw cut the Widener lead to two with 6:28 left to play, the Pride responded with a 15-0 run over the next four minutes to open up a 22-5 lead. The Spartans cut the deficit down to 11 to end the quarter as they ended the period on a 6-0 run.

Both teams were clicking offensively in the second quarter as they combined for 39 points with York out-scoring the Pride, 21-18. The Spartans and Pride traded buckets the entirety of the quarter, but York gained a little ground late. Widener led by as much as 16 in the second quarter and whittled that lead down to eight by the quarter's end. York out-scored the Pride 12-4 in the final four minutes with Shaelyn Ricks leading the way with five points during that span as the Spartans trailed, 40-32, heading into halftime.

York scored the first bucket of the third quarter to cut the Widener lead to six, but the Spartan offense struggled to gain traction from there. The Pride went on to open up a 15-point lead with under two minutes left to play as the Spartans suffered a five-minute scoring drought. Widener out-scored the Spartans 14-9 in the quarter despite just shooting 17.6% from the field, but gained significant ground at the free-throw line with a 7-for-8 performance.

The Pride put the game away by shooting 57.1 % (8-for-14) and out-gaining the Spartans 18-14 in the fourth quarter.
