Strong Start Fuels Spartans to Victory Over Albright

YORK, Pa. – The York women's basketball team started out hot and used a strong defensive effort to capture a 62-48 Commonwealth victory over Albright at home on Wednesday night.

Alyssa Hocker powered the Spartans to victory with another huge double-double performance as she scored 20 points and hauled in 18 rebounds. York put together a stout defensive effort as they held a seventh opponent to under 50 points while limiting the Lions to a season-low 20.7% shooting effort from the field.

How It Happened
The Spartans were hitting on all cylinders to start the game as they marched out to a 23-3 lead at the end of one quarter of play. York has given up five points or less in the first quarter three times in the last four games including back-to-back outings. The Spartans held the Lions to just one made field goal on 18 attempts and turned the Lions over seven times in the opening quarter. Taylor Burda led the York offense with eight points in the first quarter and Breana Grim poured in five points in her return after missing Saturday's game.

The Lions bounced back in the second quarter and out-scored the Spartans 18-12 with half of their points coming off York turnovers. The Spartans scored just five points through the first seven minutes of the second quarter on a 2-for-13 shooting performance which allowed Albright to cut their deficit down to nine with 2:30 left to play. Alyssa Hocker snapped the Spartans out of their shooting funk as she scored all seven points on a 7-2 run in the final two minutes quarter as York took a 35-21 lead into halftime.

York saw its 14-point lead dwindle down to five after Albright opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run through the first four minutes of play. Luckily for York, the Lions went scoreless over the next three minutes and finished the quarter shooting 2-for-13. Conversely, the Spartans shot 4-for-6 over the final five minutes of the third quarter to regain a double-digit lead heading into the fourth. Burda Shealyn Ricks combined for seven of York's nine points in the second half of the third quarter with Hocker pulling down four rebounds during that span.

The Spartans put the game away with a 9-0 run which spanned the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and then took a 21-point lead with 6:32 left following four-straight made free throws by Hocker. York put the clamps down on Albright as the Lions shot just 17.4% from the field (4-for-23) in the fourth quarter while the Spartans shot 41.7% (5-for-12) from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line.
