Women’s Hoops Falls at #17 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The York women's basketball team saw their losing streak extend to five with a 70-50 loss at No. 17 Christopher Newport on Friday night at the Nelson Hinson Invitational.

Team Records
York: 2-7
#17 Christopher Newport: 10-2

How It Happened
The Spartans found themselves in a back-and-forth battle throughout most of the first quarter in large part due to their stellar 6-for-7 effort from the free throw line. A pair of Grace Masser free throws cut the CNU lead down to one (13-12) with 1:25 left in the period, but the Captains ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to break open an 18-12 lead heading into the first break.

The Captains opened the quarter on a 10-0 run and took a commanding 28-12 lead just three minutes in. The Spartans struggled to dig themselves out of the hole as they were limited to just five points in the second quarter while shooting just 2-for-14 from the field as they went into halftime trailing, 31-17.

CNU put the game away in the third quarter as they out-scored York, 23-8, in the period and took their largest lead of the night when a Sydney Richardson three put the Captains ahead by 33 points with 1:37 left in third.

York finished on a high note as the Green and White out-scored CNU, 25-16, and shot 69% from the field in a high-scoring fourth quarter. Shaelyn Ricks led York with five points in the quarter as 10 different Spartans scored a point in the final 10 minutes.
