York, Pa. — York College of Pennsylvania has appointed
Derek Behrenshausen '13 as Director of Athletic Communications, recognizing his years of service, leadership, and deep-rooted commitment to Spartan Athletics.
Behrenshausen's connection to York College athletics began long before his professional role. As a student, he worked as an intern in the Athletics department, gaining early experience in athletic communications and discovering a passion for telling the stories of Spartan student-athletes. After graduating in 2013, he continued contributing to the program for several years in a part-time role before spending two years at Lehigh University as Assistant Sports Communications Director.
He returned to York College in 2019, working closely with the College's communications and athletics teams, and in 2021 formally joined the staff full time as Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. In every role, Behrenshausen has demonstrated exceptional dedication, technical expertise, and a collaborative spirit, qualities that have made him an invaluable part of the Spartan community.
Behrenshausen expressed gratitude for the opportunity and reflected on what the role means to him.
"I'd like to first thank President Thomas Burns and Vice President Brian Hazlett for their vote of confidence and support in elevating me to the Director of Athletic Communications," he said. "This appointment is bittersweet, but there is a job to be done and I am deeply honored to take on this role."
Behrenshausen's promotion comes at a time of profound loss for York College as we continue to grieve the passing of Scott Guise, longtime Director of Athletic Communications and Behrenshausen's mentor, colleague, and friend. The two worked side-by-side for many years, forming a partnership admired across campus. Together, they championed Spartan Athletics through careful storytelling, meticulous statistics, and a commitment to celebrating student-athletes with integrity.
"Scott believed deeply in Derek's talent and leadership, and we see the same thing every day," said Julie Loeper, Director of Communications. "Derek has shown compassion and professionalism during a difficult time. His knowledge of Spartan Athletics and his commitment to our community make him the right person to lead this next chapter. We are proud of him, and we are confident in his ability to move the program forward."
"It is hard to put into words the impact that Scott Guise made on my life," Behrenshausen said. "When he passed, I suddenly lost a long-time friend, mentor and colleague which has left a giant hole in my heart. To help navigate this time of transition, I pull my strength from him. It is with immense pride that I take up the mantle and continue to serve the York College community to the very best of my abilities."
With the full support of the Communications and Athletics teams, Behrenshausen will oversee all aspects of athletic communications, including media relations, game operations, statistics, digital storytelling, and student-athlete recognition. His leadership will help ensure that the foundation of Spartan Athletics continues to grow in both impact and reach.
Behrenshausen lives in Hanover, Pa. with his wife Catharine, who serves as the Head Athletic Trainer at McDaniel College. Together, they have two young children, Carter and Chloe, and a dog, Porter.
York College congratulates Derek Behrenshausen on this well-deserved appointment and looks forward to the meaningful contributions he will bring to this important role.
