Miers' 29 Powers Spartans to Third Commonwealth Win of the Year

OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College men's basketball team got a career-high 29 points from guard Chris Miers as the Spartans downed Stevenson University 95-78 in a MAC Commonwealth contest on Wednesday in Owings Mills, Maryland.
The Spartans shot 50% from three as they made a season-high 16 three-pointers in the win. York jumped out to a big first half lead and finished off the game to remain unbeaten in the league.
The Spartans improve to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in the league. The Mustangs fall to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
 
How It Happened
• The game was close early on as the Spartans led 12-10 less than five minutes into the game. The Spartans scored six of the next eight points of the game to take an 18-12 lead. The Mustangs scored four straight from the line but York hit the Mustangs with a 14-2 spurt to take a 32-19 lead with 8:39 left in the half. The highlight from the run was Colin Treude's three pointer to cap the spurt. 
• After Joey Lutz hit a three for the Mustangs, York scored 17 of the next 30 points to take a 49-35 halftime lead. The Spartans were on-point from distance in the opening 20 minutes as they converted 11-of-18 (61.1%) from three.
• The Spartans sprinted out of the halftime break with a 10-2 run to take a 59-37 lead. The 22 point margin was the high water mark of the game for the Green and White. Cameron Sapienza went on a personal 12-2 run as he hit four triples in the span of two minutes, trimming the Spartan lead to 12 with 13:31 left in the game. The Mustangs eventually got the Spartan lead in single figures at nine on a Lutz three midway through the half.
• York went on a 12-5 run inside the final five minutes to take an 87-70 lead with 1:45 left in the game. The Green and White finished off the game to earn their second conference road win of the year.  
 
By the Numbers
The Spartans finished the game shooting 48.1% (26-for-54) from the floor and 50% (16-for-32) from three … York was very good from the free throw line as they went 27-for-35 (77.1%) from the charity stripe … Stevenson shot 46.3% (25-for-54) from the field including 57.1% (8-for-14) from distance … the Mustangs were also very good from the line, converting 21-for-26 (80.8%) of their attempts … York finished with a 35-29 advantage on the glass which including a 14-9 edge in offensive rebounds … York had a 23-13 margin in second chance points … York had 20 assists on their 26 field goals … York had 12 turnovers which led to 13 Mustang points while Stevenson had 14 turnovers which York turned into 15 points … both teams had four blocked shots … York led for 39:11 (98%) of the game … Stevenson had a 32-18 advantage in paint points … Cameron Sapienza led the Mustangs with 19 points and three assists as he was 6-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-7 from distance … Mason Jones added 18 points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal … Jones was 9-for-10 from the free throw line … Cameron Smith was the third Mustang in double figures with 10.
 
Spartan Notes
The Spartans are now 19-7 all-time against the Mustangs as they have won two straight in the series .. the Spartans made a season-high 16 three pointers which is three made threes short of the school record set on February 16, 2019 against Mary Washington … the Spartans have made 39 threes in the last three games … the 27 made free throws are a new season-high for York while the 35 attempts were a new high by one (34 against Salisbury) … York won the battle on the glass for just the fifth time this year … York has recorded 55 assists in their last three games … York has a 1.89-to-1 (55-to-29) ratio … the Spartans had just six steals, tying for the lowest total of the year … senior Chris Miers was fantastic for York as he poured in a career-high 29 points while he also had three rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot in 33 minutes … Miers was 8-for-11 from the floor, 5-for-7 from three and 8-for-8 from the line … In his last three trips to Owings Mills, Miers has scored 68 points, good for an average of 22.6 points per game … Kai Cipalla added 20 points, five rebounds, and three assists in 32 minutes … Cipalla was 5-for-11 from the floor, 1-for-4 from three and 9-for-10 from the line … Jayden Rowe contributed 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, a blocked shot and two steals … Jackson Mascari, the reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week, added 11 points and nine rebounds to go along with three assists and a blocked shot ... freshman Colin Treude scored his first collegiate points on his first half three pointer. 
 
Up Next
The Spartans return home on Saturday when they host Messiah University in a MAC Commonwealth contest. Game time is set for 3:00 pm in Wolf Gymnasium.
