WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The York College Spartan men's golf team had a fantastic Sunday during day two of the D3 Northeast Elite Invitational at the Williamsport Country Club in Williamsport, PA.
The Spartans were tied for 17
th after the opening round as they shot a 303. York came storming back, shooting a tournament-best six-under-par 278 in the second round to rocket all the way up to a tie for fourth place with Franklin & Marshall. York shot a two-day total of 581. York's single round total was the lowest cumulative score in school history, besting the 282 the Spartans shot in the opening round of the Montgomery Cup Championship at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort on September 22, 2017.
Trinity (CT) won the tournament with a score of 565 (-3). Rochester finished second at 573 (+5) while RPI was third at 579 (+11) followed by the Spartans and Diplomats.
The Spartans were paced by senior
Gavin Ganter as he had a fantastic weekend. Ganter finished second overall with a two-day total of 137. Ganter shot 73 in the opening round followed by a school-record seven-under 64.
On Saturday, Ganter had three bogeys, one birdie and 14 pars in his two-over-par 73. On Sunday, he started off hot and stayed that way through 18 holes. Ganter started off four-under through seven holes. He had his only stumble of the day with a bogey on eight but he finished the opening nine with a par for the three-under 33. He started the back nine with a birdie on ten before recording five straight pars. He torched the final three holes of his round with three straight birdies to shoot a four-under 31 on the back. Ganter's 64 was the best round in the tournament. He finished two strokes back of Hamilton's Ramon Aroca Gonzalez who shot a 67 and 68 for a tournament score of 135.
Ganter now owns the single round school record, breaking Casey Leebrick's five-under-par 67 at the opening round of the Montgomery Cup on September 22, 2018.
Sophomore
Thomas O'Connell was York's next finisher as he shot 148 for the weekend. O'Connell shot 77 on Saturday and then rebounded with an even-par 71 on Sunday. O'Connell finished tied for 39
th.
Junior
Jacob Fripp and freshman
Adam Gorman were York's next two finishers as they both shot 149. Fripp carded a 78 on Saturday but bounced back with an even-par 71 on Sunday. Gorman, making his collegiate debut, began the tournament with a Saturday 77 before he shot a one-over-par 72 on Sunday. The duo finished tied for 43
rd in the 104-player field.
Freshman
Alex Koch was York's fifth tournament participant as he was making his collegiate debut. Koch shot 153 for the tournament as he carded a 76 on Saturday followed by a 77 on Sunday.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, October 5 when they head to the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Invitational hosted by McDaniel College at the Waynesboro Country Club in Waynesboro, PA. The two-day tournament kicks off on Saturday at noon.
