YORK, PA – The York College men's soccer team continued their strong start to the season with a tough and gritty 1-0 win over Neumann University in a non-conference victory on Saturday in York.
The Spartan got a goal in the 16
th minute and then hung on as the Knights put York under pressure for most of the game.
York improves to 6-0-4 overall while the Knights fall to 2-4-4.
How It Happened
• The Knights came roaring out of the gate as they fired off the first three shots of the game. The Spartans took advantage of an early opportunity in the 16
th minute of play. Goalie
Chase Broughman began the play with a throw to
Dylan Marco along the far sideline. Marco took a few touches before unleashing a long pass to
Gavin Huey. Huey ran into the pass and quickly flipped a pass towards the box where he found
Brayden Safley. The senior finished off the chance with a one-time shot for the 1-0 lead. Marco and Huey earned assists on the goal.
• The Knights out shot the Spartans 5-1 the rest of the half but Broughman made two saves to keep Neumann off the board.
• Neumann came out of the break flying as the pace of the game was frenetic. The Knights fired off three shots and two corners in the first ten minutes of the half. Neumann continued to pepper the Spartan goal but Broughman and the York defense continued to turn the Knights away. The Knights out shot the Spartans 9-4 in the second half but Broughman made three saves and the interior defense of
Dermot Williamson and
Dylan Marco repeatedly kept the Knights from tying the game.
• The game got progressively more chippy and physical. The second half featured a combined 15 fouls and three yellow cards. Neumann finished the game out shooting their hosts 17-7 including 5-2 in shots on goal. Neumann also held an 8-3 margin in corner kicks.
