LEWISBURG, PA – The York College men's golf squad opened their fall season with the opening round of the Gauntlet Tournament held at the Bucknell University Golf Course in Lewisburg, PA on Sunday.
The Spartans finished round one in fifth place as they shot a score of 290. Franklin & Marshall leads after round one with a score of 284. Gettysburg, McDaniel and Penn State Altoona are all tied for second at 289, one stroke in front of the Spartans. There are 14 teams participating in the tournament.
The Spartans were paced by senior
Gavin Ganter as he fired an even par 70 in his opening round. Ganter fired a one-over 37 on the front with a birdie, two bogeys and six pars. He followed that with eight pars and a birdie on the back for a one-under 33. Ganter is tied for sixth after round one.
The tandem of
Jacob Fripp and
Matthew Salter each shot a three-over-par 73 for their rounds. Fripp was even on the front with two birdies and two bogeys. He followed with a three-over 37 on the back for his 73. Salter was two-over on the front and followed that with a back nine 35. They are tied for 20
th in the 75-player field.
Sophomore
Thomas O'Connell was York's fourth scorer as he shot 74 for the Green and White. O'Connell was even on the front with a 36. He fired a 38 on the back for his final Sunday score. He enters Monday's second round tied for 28
th.
Senior
Jason Velez was the Spartans' fifth tournament participant as he shot an eight-over 78 on Sunday. Velez shot 36 on the front but had a very uncharacteristic 42 on the back. He is tied for 54
th.
The Spartans return to Bucknell on Monday for day two of the tournament. O'Connell starts the day for the Green and White as he goes off at 10:45. He is followed by Salter (10:54), Velez (11:03), Fripp (11:12) and Ganter (11:21).
