Women's Tennis Campaign Comes to a Close on Tuesday

The Spartans fell to Messiah 5-4 in the Commonwealth semifinals

GRANTHAM, PA.  – The York College women's tennis team had their 2023-24 season come to an end in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals 5-4 at Messiah University on Tuesday afternoon in Grantham.

The Spartans conclude the campaign with an overall mark of 5-10 while the Falcons advance to the conference finals against top seeded Albright as the Lions beat Alvernia 5-2. Messiah enters the championship with a record of 8-8.

The Falcons escaped the doubles matches with a 2-1 lead. Elsa Oestermarker and Bri Serruto earned an 8-4 first doubles win. However, the Falcons earned an 8-0 second doubles win and an 8-7 third doubles win for the 2-1 advantage heading to the singles matches.

Eleanor Beck kicked off singles play with a 6-0, 6-4 fifth singles win to tie the match at two points each. Oestermarker then put York on top with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the first singles match. Conte Kennedy earned a 6-3, 6-2 sixth singles win as the Spartans took a 4-2 lead midway through the singles matches.

Messiah's Bella Heckman earned a 6-4, 6-3 fourth singles win over Maddi Haggerty in a tightly contested match. The Falcons tied the match with a Kiara Bomboy three-set win over Serruto 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to tie the match at four wins each.

The Falcons earned the overall match win thanks to a marathon second singles match as Kylie Walker outlasted Hannah Sult 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-2 in the decisive match.

The loss ends the stellar career of Oestermarker as she leaves the Spartan program as the all-time wins leader in both singles and doubles play. Ostermarker finishes her career with an overall record of 44-18 in singles play and 45-18 in doubles play for the Spartans. She finished her senior year with a record of 10-5 overall including 4-2 in conference play. Oestermarker and Serruto combined to post a team-high nine wins in doubles play.

Beck had a stellar junior year as she earned a team-high 12 wins including 5-1 in the conference in fifth singles play. Beck ended the season riding a five-game win streak.

The Spartans are slated to return five of their six starters for next year's team.
