Spartan Women Edge Alvernia in MAC Commonwealth Tilt

Spartans won five of the first six matches to capture the overall win

YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis team posted a 5-4 home win over Alvernia University in a MAC Commonwealth contest on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon in York.

The Spartans improve to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in the Commonwealth. The Golden Wolves are now 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the league.

The Spartans got off to a great start as the Green and White swept the three doubles matches. The third doubles team of Eleanor Beck and Kennedy Conte kicked off the scoring with an 8-1 win in their match. The second doubles team of Hannah Sult and Maddi Haggerty posted an 8-5 win and the number one tandem of Elsa Oestermarker and Bri Serruto recorded an 8-7 (7-3) victory.

Beck finished first in the singles play as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 fifth singles win to put the Spartans up 4-0. The Golden Wolves got on the board with a retirement win at the third singles match. York then closed out the match as Conte recorded a 6-3, 6-0 sixth singles win to give York a 5-1 lead.

The Golden Wolves won the remaining three singles matches but it wouldn't matter as the Green and White picked up their second league win of the year.

The Spartan win was their first victory in a one-point decision as they had entered the match 0-3 when the match came down to one point.

The Spartans step out of conference for the final time this year on Friday as they head to McDaniel for a match against the Green Terror. The contest is set for a 4:00 pm start in Westminster, Maryland.
