Spartans Come Up Short in Home Finale

YORK, Pa. – The Spartan women's basketball team fell in a hard-fought 72-65 loss to Widener in York's final home game of the season Tuesday night.

Despite the loss, the Spartans have a spot secured in the Commonwealth postseason tournament and can finish as high as third with either a win on Saturday at Hood or a loss by Alvernia.

Team Records
Widener 20-4 (10-3 MACC)
York 14-10 (7-6 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Spartans and Pride traded blows throughout the first quarter, but Widener maintained a slight edge with an 18-15 lead at the quarter's end. The Pride led by as much as nine (15-6) with 3:49, but York finished the quarter on a 9-3 run, with Georgia Panopoulos leading the way with four points, to cut the Spartan deficit to three heading into the second quarter.
  • York shot just 17.6% from the field with three made field goals in the second quarter while Widener increased the gap to 10 points (34-24) at the halftime break. Both teams started out slow to start the second as they combined for just six total points through the first 4:04 and York pulled within one on a Panopoulos three-pointer with 5:56 left. Over the last five minutes of the quarter, the Spartan offense went quiet and the Pride roared on with a 14-5 run as they shot 4-for-5 from the field during that span, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
  • Both teams found their offense coming out the break as each scored 21 in the third quarter. Widener's Mia Robbins led all players with 13 points in the quarter and Alyssa Hocker led York with 10. Hocker scored the final three points of a 5-0 Spartan run which cut the Widener led to three with 1:18 left in the third, but Robbins responded with five unanswered points which fueled a 7-0 run for the Pride to end the quarter as they took a 55-45 lead into the fourth.
  • The Spartans won the final quarter, 20-17, but came up short in their comeback efforts after cutting the Widener lead down to four twice inside the final three minutes. Jordan D'Ambrosio came through in the clutch for Widener as she scored the final eight points for the Pride and led all players with 13 in the fourth quarter.
