Volleyball Caps Home Slate With Saturday Tri-Match

YORK, Pa. - The Spartan women's volleyball team lost a pair of 3-1 decisions to Virginia Wesleyan and Neumann in their last home matches of the season on Saturday.

The Spartans and Marlins went back-and-forth three times before the Marlins prevailed, 25-18, in the first set. York held an 11-8 lead before VWU went on a 9-2 run to take a 17-13 advantage and held the lead the rest of the set. York never trailed in the second set as they won the set, 25-20. The Marlins cut the Spartan lead to two (22-20), but then a Jennifer Taylor kill sparked a 3-0 run which clinched the set. VWU edged out a 25-23 victory to take the third set as the Marlins scored back-to-back points to break out of the 23-23 tie. The Marlins clinched the match with a convincing 25-14 win in the fourth set as they ended the set on a 9-0 run.

Va. Wesleyan's Emma Claytor and Hanna Smith led all players with 14 kills each, while Jennifer Taylor led the Spartans with 11. VWU's Madeline Hanes recorded a match-leading 16 digs and Jasmine Doguin led York with 13. Leah Scalise led the Marlins with five total blocks and Morgan Nolte paced the Spartans with four.

The Spartans and Knights traded the lead a whopping eight times in the first set until Melissa Eddy notched back-to-back kills for Neumann to win the frame, 25-23. The Spartans broke out of an early tie and used a 9-0 run to go ahead 16-9 and never slowed down as they went on to win the second set, 25-16. The Knights racked up 16 kills and .412 as they steamrolled their way to a 25-13 victory in set number three. Neumann put together another dominant performance to win the fourth set, 25-16, and clinch the match as they hit .320 with 12 kills in the final frame.

Knights Melissa Eddy and Julia Solomon led all players with 12 kills each in the match and Taylor led York with 11. Neumann's Hanna Strohm led all players with 18 digs and Georgianna Kahley led York with 15.

The Spartans will end the season with a 4-7 record at home … the Spartan senior class will end their careers with a mark of 29-15 on their home floor … Jennifer Taylor led York with 22 total kills on the day to go along with five total blocks … Alyssa Mott led the Spartans with 41 total assists on the afternoon … Jackie Karcz led York with six service aces … Jasmine Doguin and Georgianna Kahley tied for the lead in digs with 18 each … Morgan Nolte led the way with six total blocks.

The Spartans wrap up regular season Commonwealth play with a trip to Alvernia on Wednesday.
